Caught
She is running for dear life.
Choosing the turn on the left, she calls upon her temporary strength and leaps over the high fence without hesitation, leaving the furious protests behind.
She keeps running.
There is no point to glance over her shoulder – they are not easy to be shaken off, she is certain of that. The echoing footsteps confirm her fear. But she is exhausted, for she has run for miles, and that even forces the borrowed stamina to wear thin. On top of that, she knows her power is draining.
She mustn't be caught.
Without warning, someone grabs her arm and pulls her effortlessly into a narrow alley. She struggles with all her might in the darkness while a hand is placed over her mouth roughly. It smells of rich leather. She tastes salt as she sinks her teeth deep in, but of course it is useless, so she aims a kick blindly, hoping it is a vulnerable spot – for she assumes it to be a man straightaway – and expects to be released immediately. She realizes she is mistaken however as the man lowers the hold onto her throat. It leaves her mouth unguarded for no more than a second, but it is enough for her to let out a ragged scream.
"Shh." He hisses at her ear, covering her mouth again to stiffen it. "You'll expose us."
Precisely that moment, a deep voice growls out. "Stop. I thought I 'eard something." The gloved hand presses tighter against her mouth and she swallows her urge to cough.
They freeze, and she can make out the outlines of the men standing not far away. Holding her breath, she prays – if there is a God – that they will not distinguish the shadows in the alley.
A howl interrupts the stillness.
"Probably just a stray." Another pauses, "Nothin' here, you bloody fool. She's gettin' away! Come on!" They hurry away, their booming footsteps already fading.
Then everything subsides into silence.
And shadows.
For she has held her breath for too long.
I have a general idea of the plot, but I need time to plan out scenes.
