In a response to my last piece, I wanted to try something instead that was entirely dialogue-based inside of barely dialogue-based. An experiment, if you will. I want to see that, if I can convey a scene with only actions and little dialogue, how would it turn out if the scene was instead conveyed with only dialogue and a little bit of action?

The way I see it, the two scenes will produce entirely different effects, and maybe it will help me learn when a scene needs more dialogue and when it needs less.

If it turns out really bad, I'm sorry. I'm doing this for my own amusement alone.

"Wally?"

"Yeah?"

"What do you want to do when you grow up?"

A short pause as the boy thought over his response. "I dunno yet. Something cool, maybe. Like a cop. Why?"

"Just wondering."

"Oh."

". . . Wally?"

"Yeah?"

"What about a family?"

"What d'ya mean?"

"Y'know. Like when you play tea parties with me. When there's a mommy and a daddy and a daughter and a son."

"Oh."

"Well?"

"Well, what?"

"What about a family?"

"Oh. Er. . . yeah, I guess."

"Yeah, as in, you want a family?"

"Sure, yeah."

"With a mommy?"

"Well, duh."

"And you'd be the daddy. What about a son?"

"Yeah! I'd teach him to play dodgeball."

"And a daughter?"

"Yeah, I guess. As long as she's not all girly and weird."

"And a mommy?"

"You already asked that."

"What would she be like?"

"Crud, Kuki, I dunno! She could be like anything!"

"What about. . . tall?"

"I guess."

"And cheerful!"

"That'd be nice."

"And with black hair!"

"Why would she need to have black hair?"

"I dunno."

". . . Black hair's nice, I guess."

"And. . . what if she had really big, colorful eyes?"

"I don't see why her eyes matter."

"Because they do!"

"Okay, fine. Yes. With big, colorful eyes."

"That'd be fun!"

"What?"

"That'd be fun! Mommies and daddies have so much fun together!"

". . . uh. . . sure."

Another short pause. "Wally?"

"Yeah?"

"Wanna go get some ice cream with me?"

"Yeah, sure."
