Happy Marriage? Maybe Not
"Hi." Jackie said cheerfully as Nick walked into the bedroom after working a double.
"Hi." He said tiredly.
"Did you solve your case?" She asked.
"Yep." He replied.
"Good." She told him.
"Jackie, can I ask you something?" He asked.
"Sure, what is it?" She asked as she turned off the T.V.
"Are you happy?"
"Yes, very, the kids are all asleep, I finished my book tonight, and I get the day off tomorrow, I'm thrilled." She said.
"No, I mean, are you happy, with us. You and me?" He explained as he sat down and grabbed her hand.
"Yes I'm happy in our marriage. Why would you ask me that? Are you not happy in our marriage?" She asked.
"Yes I'm happy, it's just that as I was leaving the lab I got a phone call from a very good high school friend of mine. He and his wife are getting divorced after 13 years of marriage. They seemed so happy, they actually reminded me of our marriage. It got me thinking of us, if they can get a divorce then it makes me worry about us."
"That's normal to question things, I've had friends get divorced and it surprised me too. I think in every marriage there are ups and downs, but if you truly love one another you'll let the downs bring you closer, not rip you apart, and I think we've been through an awful lot of hard times in our marriage and we are still going strong." She told him with a reassuring smile.
"Like what? What downs are you talking about?" He asked.
"Your job, it's so dangerous, I can't tell you what it does to my heart and soul when I get a call in the middle of the night saying that you've been hurt or kidnapped, or god knows what else. If our marriage can survive that then I think it's pretty solid." She told him with a smile.
He smiled back at her.
"I'm sorry about your friend's divorce, that's too bad, do they have children?" She asked.
"No, they don't."
"That might be good." She said.
"Yeah, maybe." He agreed.
"I love you Nicky."
"I love you too Jacks." He replied.
"And think about it, the fact that we can sit down with one another and discuss our concerns about our marriage I think tells a lot."
"I agree." He said, shaking his head.
He leaned over and kissed her passionately.
"Should we hit the hay, I'm tired." He told her after they had unlocked their lips.
"I'm pregnant." was her answer.
