Prologue

A girl stands alone in a void of darkness. Her usually soft, calm, brown eyes are now clear and sharp as she gazes into the darkness. From the darkness a blue glow appears. As the glow nears her it takes on the form of a girl, looking much like a hologram. "Why did you come here? You should have stayed where you where safe…" the hologram says sadly looking at the girl.
"Who are you?" asks the girl. The hologram tilts her head to the right and seems to be thinking as if not knowing what or who she was.
"I am Lain and you are Lai. You should not have come here. You should have stayed in the Real World."
"What do you mean? I haven't gone anywhere. Plus there is only one world the Real World. If this is not the Real World where is it?"
"It is nowhere. We are in the Nonbeing. Which confuses me because you do exist…"
"And you don't exist?" Lain looks down at her feet but looks back up just in time for Lai to see a tear roll from her cheek and fall. It falls until reaching where Lain's feet rest then disappears into what seems to be jet-black water creating a ripple, which goes off and past Lai into the nothingness.
"I did once…but I restarted it all, I erased myself from them…it was better that way…" Lain say as another tear falls off her cheek.
"I don't understand…" Lai says.
"You will understand soon enough…I wish I could stop it, I wish I could protect you but I can't…I will return to the world I once almost ruled…maybe just maybe things will be different this time…"
"Different from what?" Lai asked in a desperate tone. But Lain just shakes her head sadly. She walks up to Lai who puts her hand out as if wanting the girl, Lain, to take her hand and explain it all to her. Lain does not do this but puts a necklace in Lai's hand and closes Lai's fingers around it.
"One thing you must not forget…where ever you go we are all connected…" Lain says and then disappears. Lai left alone in the darkness stands and turns all different directions calling out to Lain.
"Please come back…don't leave me alone…" She gives up, sits down, puts her head in her hands and cries. The darkness come closer and closer around her engulfing her. In the distance Lain's words repeat.
"…where ever you go we are all connected…"
