Luckiest Girl

The skies were overcast, and rain was inevitable. As many of the boarding students from Dalton Academy walked to the cafeteria, Merril Portman slowly paced around her dorm room. She was expecting a very important call from her aunt and uncle. Today was the last day of the custody battle, and the Judge would give his or her verdict any minute. She glanced at her phone occasionally to check the time, when suddenly it rang.

"This is it." she said," The moment of truth."

"Merril! Sweetie we won!" her aunt squealed excitedly.

"Darling you are now officially able to undergo your surgery! Congratulations!" her uncle chortled.

"Oh my god! You guys are the best! I don't know what I would do without you!" Merril sobbed into the phone.

"Oh Merril we are so happy for you! Listen, we have to go, but call us ok?" her aunt said.

"Ok! Make sure you send the judge flowers from me! Love you! Bye!" Merril choked.

Merril stood there for a moment to allow this all to sink in.

This is real. This isn't a dream, she thought. I am now able to be what I've always wanted. No limits. Nobody pulling me down. Suddenly there was a knock at the door. Merril opened it and saw none other than the Hollywood heartthrob Julian Larson.

"Spencer's having a heart attack and…Woah Merril are you ok? Is something wrong?"

"No! No! Everything's fine!" Merril stuttered.

"Wait, then why are you crying? What happened?" asked the confused actor.

"No, it's just…Well my aunt and uncle won custody of me…And I'm now able to get my operation. These are happy tears!" Merril grinned.

"Oh! Well, that's good! I'm really happy for you Merril." Julian said as he hugged the still sobbing girl.

"Thanks Julian."

"No problem. Now, let's get you to the cafeteria so Spencer can stop worrying. He was convinced that you got kidnapped or something."

They both walked out of the Hanover dorm room and headed towards the cafeteria. As she walked, Merril said to herself,

"I must be the luckiest girl in the world right now."
