"She's in the hospital with the flu," The words had barely come out of Ron's mouth before Andy was already filled with worry. It wasn't unlike April to skip a day of work, but when Ron wouldn't give him any specifics, he knew something had been wrong. This was just Ron conforming his suspicions.
"Is she alright?" Andy asked.
"She'll be fine, Andrew," Ron replied, a hint of annoyance in his tone, "It's just a flu."
"Right…" Andy said.
Andy and Ron stared at each other a few minutes before Ron sighed, "Go," he said.
"She probably doesn't want me to see her," Andy said. It sounded to Ron that he was mostly trying to talk himself out of going. As much as he hated knowing about his co-workers personal lives, he had to admit that his life would be much easier if Andy and April sorted this out. Thanks to Leslie, Ron knew a bit of what was going on; how April had kissed Andy before she found out that he had kissed Ann. It took an idiot to miss how much April and Andy cared about each other, and they were apparently big enough idiots to not see it themselves.
"I am ordering you to go visit April," Ron said gruffly.
"Really?" Andy asked with a smile.
"Go, or you're fired," Ron said before he turned away. Maybe when April was better, things will finally get back to normal.
I literally feel like I'm dying, April thought. It didn't feel nearly as fun as April though it would. It didn't feel fun at all. She felt hot and cold at the same time, and starving even though she hadn't been able to keep anything down all day. April cursed Leslie again for stealing her medicine. She would call for some more, but April really didn't want to see Ann right now. Well, she never wanted to see Ann. She always hated Ann but this… jealousy was new. She was afraid that if she saw Ann that she would have to admit that she was afraid her and Andy would get back together and leave her with a broken heart.
Of course, it wouldn't matter that April's heart was broken if she was dead. And as the minutes of agony drew on, April was sure that the sweet release was only moments away.
Until a voice cut through the fog forcing her to open her eyes, "Oh my god, April," was all she heard. She hoped for a moment that it was Andy. Maybe Ron had broken his promise and told him that she was in the hospital. Maybe he was coming to apologize for all the stupid shit that had happened because she was suck and maybe she'd finally be happy. But she soon realized that she voice she'd heard was a woman's voice. And as soon as she opened her eyes, she saw that it was her stupid, slutty nurse.
"Go away," April moaned, "Just let me die."
"You're not dying," Ann snapped. "But you do have an insane fever. Did you take your medicine?"
"No."
"April-"
"Leslie took it," April muttered, "And she made me promise not to tell you."
"Damn it," Ann hissed, "I'll deal with her later. We need to cool you down."
April wanted to scream at Ann not to touch her, but April honestly couldn't think of anything nicer than cooling down. She could feel the sweat dripping from her body and it felt disgusting. She hadn't showered since she got in the hospital and she was probably to the grossest thing ever. At least Ann would probably get all gross taking care of her.
"This is bad, April," Ann said after taking her temperature
"Life threatening bad?"
"No," Ann replied, "But I need to keep you in here longer."
"I'm going to kill Leslie," April hissed.
"You and me both," Ann said. April could barely keep her eyes open. Ann sensed that and gave April a quick goodbye before leaking her to rest.
Andy hadn't really been to the hospital when he wasn't the one injured. It was weird to actually walk through on his own, not in a wheelchair or a gurney. He realized that he didn't really know his way around the hospital.
"Andy?" A voice asks. Ann. He turns around and gives her a small smile.
"Hey," Was all her replied. As much as he liked Ann, there was a part of him that harbored a little resentment towards her for that had happened why did she kiss him? They had been broken for more than a year, and he had found someone he wanted to be with. Why did Ann have to ruin it? But Andy knew that wasn't fair. He hadn't kissed her back, but he hadn't exactly pushed her away.
"Andy…" Ann said slowly, "You can't see April right now."
"What? Why?" Andy asked.
"She's really sick," Ann explained.
"Ron said it was just a flu," Andy said.
"It was," Ann continued, "But she hasn't gotten any better, and we think it could be more serious,"
"Is this is you trying to get me to stay away from her, it really isn't funny, Ann," Andy said. There was no way Ron would lie to him. If he had said April was alright, then she was alright. That all there was to it.
"Andy," Ann asked incredulously, "Why would I lie."
"You don't like her," Andy shrugged, "And you don't like that I like her."
"God, you are such a child," Ann sighed,
"A child who you broke up with then kissed,"
"Okay, fine," Ann snapped, "You don't believe me, go see for yourself."
Ann briskly walked off, not bothering to check if Andy was following her. She really couldn't figure out what Andy saw in April. She was as different from Ann as ice and fire, yet he loved them both. Ann didn't get it, but she could see it was real. Whatever she had thought could develop between the two of them was gone, but she couldn't stand around and let them both poke fun at how April had "stolen" him from her.
"There," Ann said as she gestured to the open door, "Totally sick and can't have any visitors."
Ann expected some sort of dumb retort, but Andy remained silent. She looked back at him and saw his eyes fixed on the sleeping April. Ann instantly regretting trying to use April against him. April looked like hell, and while it probably looked worse than it actually was, Ann could see the worry etched into Andy's face.
"I'm sorry…" Ann began, but Andy only shook his head.
"Its fine," he replied, "I should probably call Ron and tell him… he thinks she's on the mend."
"Yeah…"Ann stammered, "I guess I'll just… go."
As Ann walked away, she wondered what had happened to Andy the past couple of months. She wondered what April had awoken within him that he was almost sick with worry when she was in trouble. Even as she asked the questions she knew the answer. He was like this because he was in lover.
