Authors Note:Hello users. This is my first story so please don't get very mad at me if I use the wrong Fan Fiction slang etc. So I have a Chicago fire story for y'all. Just so you know Matt is not married Ryan is his niece and they look very similar (because I don't have a great description in here). Also This takes place the day after Andy Darden dies Ben and Griffin are not in the picture just yet I may introduce them at a later time though. This seems like its going to be a long story so please don't give up hope if I don't update for a while school is really hectic right now. Also don't worry Matt's past will be revealed later on.
Disclaimer: I own nothing but my OC so if its publicly recognizable its not mine. Also any reference to any persons places trademarks etc. is purely accidental.
So on with the story!
Chapter 1
Thirteen year old Ryan Casey was sitting at home trying to distinguish if her uncle and guardian Matthew Casey was sleeping or still crying. They had just returned from the hospital where they and the rest of the crew from firehouse 51 for the news that their best friend was not coming home. Ryan was afraid that Matt would go down the same path he did when his father died Christe had told her how awful it was. She said that Matt had panic attacks and was so close to the breaking point but Kelly had brought him back. "Kelly" Ryan thought aloud I should call him he'll know what to do.
"Hi this is Leslie speaking" Shay said.
"Umm Shay can I talk to Kelly?"
"I'm not sure he won't come out of his room."
"Well can you please try Matt is in a really bad place and I need some help."
"What's wrong is he alright?"
" When we came home he went upstairs and locked his door. Which he never does and he hasn't come down since. I heard him crying a while ago but now I can't hear anything." Ryan tripped up trying to say the words all at once.
"Hey calm down. Want me to call Dawson?"
"Yeah sure maybe she could get through to him that this is not his fault."
"Alright. Is there anything else you need before I call Gabby"
"No I think that's it."
"Shay?"
"Yeah." Shay replied she hoped that Ryan would finally open up to her seeing as she had always been so stubborn and almost never shared her feelings.
"Never mind"
Shay was crushed she thought Ryan would admit that she was hurting and needs someone too. She made the mental note to tell Dawson to check on her too. Then she promptly picked up the receiver and dialed Dawson. "Gabby, hey it's Shay"
"Shay is everything alright?" Dawson asked pulling on her clothes and grabbing her keys because if Shay was calling her now and not consoling Severide something had to be wrong. The last time this had happened. No she was not going back to that day. Back to the memories of Casey lying there pale and. No she could not think about that right now. Then she realized that Shay had said something and she wasn't paying attention. "Yeah sorry I'm here."
"Ryan just called me Casey seems to be taking Andy's death pretty badly. Can you run and check on him?"
"Yeah sure anything else you need"
"Oh yeah, Ry seemed really distant and lost on the phone can you check on her too. I wanted to ask her but you know those two they are tough nuts to crack. But for some reason you have it down to a science."
"Yep I definitely got some of those interrogation skills Antonio's got." She joked.
"Oh yeah" Shay replied.
"I'm pulling up now gotta go." Dawson said before hanging up. She sat in her car breathing trying to prepare herself for whatever she might see through that door.
Dawson walked up to the front door and rang the bell.
"Gabby?" Ryan asked
"Hey, yeah it's me." Dawson replied as Ryan opened the door. She then took a careful look at Ryan, she seemed okay looked like she has been crying though. Well she lost one of the closest things she had ever had to a father. Dawson thought. "At least Ry can't remember the last time." Dawson muttered.
"At least I can't remember what?" Ryan inquired.
"Snap" Dawson thought, that was something of a house secret. "Nothing" she replied.
"Why is everybody hiding something from me?!" Ryan yelled before stomping away.
"Ry, come on don't do this" Dawson called after her. She didn't get any reply so she slowly moved upstairs and stood outside the door to Matt's room. "Matt" she called. "Matt" she said again. "I'm coming in" she said as she opened the door. What she saw shocked her it had only been ages hours since the doctors had told them that they couldn't save Andy Darden, and his room was already a pigsty. The she noticed the lump shaking under the covers. "Oh Matt" she said walking over to the bed and pulling the covers off of him. She saw that his eyes were puffy and red from crying and that he hadn't changed out of his work clothes. "Come on Matt you need to get up." Dawson said. "I need you Kelly needs you and Ryan needs you."
"Ryan, she she can't see me like this" he stuttered.
"Too late" said a small voice coming from the doorway.
"Ry" Matt said.
Ryan stood in the doorway. Her watery blue eyes darting around the room trying to avoid looking at Matt or Gabby. Gabby could see tears building up trying to force themselves out before Ryan turned and ran down the hall to her room. "Go" Matt said "she needs you right now".
Gabby ran off leaving Casey alone to think. He kept going over and over the call in his head trying not to hear the racking sobs coming from the room down the hall.
"Ryan can I come in?" Gabby asked.
"No" a Ryan said try to keep her voice normal, trying to hold back the tears and the sobs, trying to believe that this was a dream or a sick prank not a reality not her reality.
Gabby heard right through her efforts and a opens the door anyways ignoring Ryan's futile protests. She sat down next to her leaning against the wall. "You know something."
"What" Ryan said trying to let her words turn into racking sobs.
"It's okay to cry sometimes. When you're sad, when nothing seems to make sense anymore, when"
"Shouldn't you be having this talk with Uncle Matt not me" Ryan interrupted building her walls back up again.
"Ry you're hurting we call all see that" Gabby protested.
"Kelly should have vented the back and Darden shouldn't have been such an idiot!" Ryan nearly screamed.
"Okay" Gabby said leaving " if you need me I will be"
"I'm fine" Ryan shot her words ice cold. And then she closed the door.
Dawson sank down her back on the wall. "Why do they have to be this way" she said to no one in particular. Her phone began to ring. Loudly. She had left the volume all the way up in case someone called her about well anyone. "Hello" she answered.
"Hey, how's it going over there" Shay whispered.
"Well..."
"Come on Dawson what happened"
"Ryan won't talk to me, Matt looks like hell and the think they both blame Severide."
"Ryan will get over it that's just how she is. Matt will get better. And everyone will realize its nobody's fault."
"I don't know about Ryan."
"She's headstrong we all know that."
"But"
"Besides when has she opened up to anyone but Kelly or Andy. Heck she doesn't even really tell Matt half of what happens in her head and they live together."
"I guess you're right"
"You're welcome."
"Wait who's everybody? Oh Kelly blames Matt doesn't he?"
"Yeah, but he'll get over it. You sleeping over there"
"I think I should."
"Talk to you tomorrow"
"Yeah sure. Night Shay."
"Night Dawson"
Ryan woke up earlier than normal. Rubbing her eyes she walked down stairs. She immediately stopped when she saw a lump on the couch. Ryan tiptoed over to it and realizing that it was Dawson she angrily walked into the kitchen. "What gives her the right to stay here?" Ryan thought. She wanted to get out of the house so she wrote a note to Matt and went for a run.
Ryan then realized how cold it was and nearly turned around to get her jacket but angrily turned back around. "I will not go back while she's there" Ryan yelled to no one in particular. Soon she found herself running past the railroad tracks, past the police station, past the firehouse. Well nearly, Boden was already at the house and he waved her in. "Ryan" Boden started.
She held up her hand "I'm fine, Matt's fine and we're coming into work later."
"Are you sure? I can give you guys the day off I know you were very close to Andy." He trailed off.
"I'm fine Chief, are you sure you don't need some time Andy was one of your, uhh our men." Ryan spoke hesitantly as if unsure about her boundaries seeing as she had just joined the truck as a junior firefighter a few weeks ago.
"Yes he was one of our best men here at 51." Boden said sadly "And no I'm good many a man has died for this city but the fires continue to start."
"Well said Chief, wish I could stay and chat but I've gotta run back home for my stuff. See you in thirty." Ryan said running out the door and back towards the Casey residence.
Her feet pounded rhythmically against the pavement and she almost didn't see a man step out of the shadows. "Can I help you." She said bravely taking a step towards the man.
"Yes" the man replied sullenly. Pulling a rag out of his pocket and jamming it over her mouth and nose. Ryan at ugh led but the drug took over and she fell to the ground out cold.
Suddenly as the man was showing her into the back of a van someone screamed. Afraid someone would call the police even though the stretch of road they were on was fairly deserted the man pulled out his .38 caliber special and dropped the woman. Then he jumped into the drivers seat and sped away.
