"Bye, Max-Ernest! Tell Sheila that I said hi! Also, you should really fix that chandelier- it could fall on someone and crush them," said Cassandra, walking over to her husband's bright green sports car.
"Goodbye, Cass! Tell Yo-Yoji that he'll do great in his performance this weekend!"
"Will do!" said Cass. She put her backpack into the trunk, and sat down in the front seat. As she started up the car, she thought about ways to deny her husband's request to get a mohawk. She had been telling him every day that it was a bad idea, and she was confident that she was going to change his mind. Her thinking was interrupted by her phone buzzing very loudly in her cup holder. She slowed down the car to read the text (even though her husband was not cautious driving, she decided that there was no reason for her to not be). The text read, "could u pick up food on the way 2 the house? Idk why I always forget." Cass sighed and changed direction. The bobble head alien on the front of the car bobbled up and down. She would have pressed her husband not to get it since it could be a distraction while she was driving, but she eventually gave in because it represented his band, Alien Heartache. As she pulled over, the alien bobbed side to side as if asking where they were. Cass allowed herself to smile at it since no one was looking. She did think it was kind of cute, but don't tell her I said so.
At first, the trip to the grocery store was perfectly normal. She got everything she needed, and she was waiting in the line for checkout when she realized that she'd forgotten to get eggs. She groaned- this would mean losing her place in line- but then again, she needed eggs for breakfast. She turned around, ignoring the line's groan of frustration, and walked over to the breakfast aisle, right next to the eggs. Someone was walking behind her. They looked... familiar. Cass couldn't quite put her finger on it, but she was pretty sure she knew them. As she walked closer to the refrigerator, she started speeding up. It was making her kind of nervous, not knowing who they were but knowing that she had seen them. An idea kept coming into her head, a crazy one, but she pushed it away. It would be a one in a million chance, she thought. No, it's not possible, is it? She didn't think she could take it any more. Biting her lip, she accidentally bumped her cart into a box of cereal, which fell down, which made about ten others fall down with it. Groaning in in a growing frustration, she turned around to pick them up. The woman behind her knelt down too.
"Here, I'll help. How did so many cereals fa-" the woman's eyes widened. She didn't even finish her sentence. All at once, Cass knew who it was.
"Si... Simone?" said Cass, but it wasn't really a question. The woman gasped. The gasp was followed by a familiar grin.
"Cass!" The two old friends embraced. "I thought that I would never see you again!" said Simone.
"Me neither! Did you find your family? And you can speak good English now!"
"Yes! I found my family at the age of fifteen after a lot of searching. They were sorry for ever giving me to Hugo, and raised me in Africa. Then I went to college and got a degree, and I came here to work!" Simone rolled her eyes. "English makes no sense! For a while I considered developing a communication by eating chocolate instead." Simone burst into laughter, and Cass quickly followed. They got some funny looks, but for the first time, Cass didn't care. They just sat there laughing, cereal completely forgotten. And that was the beginning of a friendship that started so long ago with a quetzal. A very hungry quetzal.
