"They were out of Mountain Dew," Sam lies, "so I got you this instead."
Bloodshot eyes rove warily over the unfamiliar bottle. "Is it fizzy?"
"Yeah." Sam's boots scuff across the salt-encrusted carpet. "Actually it's naturally fizzy."
"Naturally fizzy?" Dean sounds tired, suspicious.
"And mildly alcoholic," Sam hastily adds.
"Now you're talking."
The cold bottle passes from Sam's hand to Dean's, cap twisting off with a gaseous hiss. Dean drinks. Then flinches.
"That's supposed to be there," Sam pre-empts glossily as the bottle clunks onto the coffee table.
Dean sizes him up.
"What did you say this stuff was called?"

A/N 2: Kombucha is a naturally effervescent fermented tea brewed using something that looks like (but is not) a giant mushroom, and a friend in California who's recently become addicted to it tells me there's a slimy globule in each of the bottles he buys at the grocery store. Kombucha is reputed to help with digestion and generally promote health.
