Author's Note: My knowledge of Elfen Lied is based on the anime and the Elfen Lied wiki, so this probably isn't completely accurate.

Names define a person. Kaede, Lucy and Nyu were all her names.
First, she was Kaede. The quiet orphan girl who no one liked. Kaede was rarely considered by prospective adoptive parents because of her hair color and her horns. People thought she was a troubled child who dyed her hair for attention.
Kaede was bullied by the other orphans and the staff didn't like her much, so she became withdrawn and stopped showing her emotions. One could say that she was broken.
Then, the puppy came along. Kaede grew to love the puppy and shared her small meals with him. Eventually, she told another girl about her puppy and made that girl promise not to tell.
But, that girl was a liar and told the other bullies almost immediately. Watching them beat her puppy to death with a vase was when broken Kaede's mind gave birth to an angry, hateful monster.
This unnamed monster enjoyed slaughtering her fellow orphans. Kaede tried to push it back, but it never left for long.
Soon, the monster met a boy named Kouta and Kaede, not the monster, became friends with him. Kaede played by day and the monster killed by night. When Kouta said that he was leaving, Kaede was sad and the monster rejoiced.
When Kouta lied about his cousin's gender, Kaede disappeared and the monster took over. The monster started with the people at the festival and only stopped after murdering Kouta's father and little sister, Kanae.
The monster stayed out for a long time, only to be suppressed by Kaede after meeting Aiko. Aiko was Kaede's first true friend, one that never lied to her. When Aiko was shot, Kaede agreed to be studied in exchange for Aiko's safety. When Aiko died, Kaede vanished for the final time, leaving only the monster, now called Lucy.
Without Kaede in the way, Lucy could do anything without remorse. She was vicious and truly enjoyed hurting others. After all, she'd been born from the pent up anger of a broken little girl.
Lucy snagged her chance at leaving as soon as it was available. She didn't care about the fact that she was naked. She's lost any sense of modesty sometime during her confinement. She almost made it out. Almost. After Lucy was shot in the head, innocent Nyu was born.
Nyu met and lived with Kouta and his cousin Yuka much to Lucy's rage. Lucy wanted, no needed, to kill Yuka.
Eventually, Lucy's hatred toward Yuka faded and wanting what was best for Kouta, she faded a bit to allow Nyu to live.
Lucy wasn't surprised that Kouta hated her. She was surprised when he said she could continue living with him. The only condition was that she didn't hurt or kill anyone.
Nyu lived a while longer, but all good things must come to an end. In order to save the world of humans, Lucy was needed.
Then they died.
Years later, Kouta's daughter Nyuu would meet up with twins Lucy and Kaede and they would live again.
