Chapter 0: Prologue

Once upon a time..

Cliche, trite, hackneed as it is this is where it begins. With a fairytale.

No maybe that's not quite true.

This started with a cruel prince kicking his servants, whispers of a castle, and an old witch on a cold day who had seen so much cruelty and misplaced power that she did something terrible and so very right.

She made the man who was ever so beastly, a beast. Not a simple transformation or infection, like the creatures that hid in the deadly woods, something more permanent.

Something deeper. Something that reveals and unveils to the world what kind of monster you are on the inside. She wanted it to be fair, of course. So she equally infected all of the castle. People changed.

Lamps, Tea Kettles, Decorations, Clocks, Candlesticks...

and a Beast. They all retained something from their human lives to her malicious glee.

Then, to her surprise, she found a Rose. Not any rose, a Rose. Her spell had unveiled a person so filled with love and goodness that it erased everything she was to this flower. For this beast of a man.

And she was dying. The witch felt herself fill with regret on this one who was innocent.

So she did everything she could to reverse the spell, but it was too strong. So then she tried to make her immortal, and could only extend this girls life for five winters. So in her grief and guilt she wove another spell, tying this girl's fate to the entire castle.

The man was angry at first, demanded answers and felt no shame for his actions, but she still told him the riddle to save his kingdom and the girl who loved him so.

"You who are so ugly inside, will reflect you true nature as will your entire castle until you can find someone who loves you despite you evil. And who will make you want to be better for."

She watched for years anxiously awaiting for a change in the increasingly desperate man, all the while the little girl wilted and lost her unearthly beauty. And she never saw one.

Eventually an old man came and he was a cruel as ever embittered, and he trapped the man. Which was not unexpected. But then his daughter tracked him down and fell in love. That was most definitely unexpected.

She lost all hope. And when the castle changed back she traveled to the tower, with the imprisoned Rose. She was glassy eyed and cold, and the witch wept for her while the girl and the prince lived their happy ending.

...

More recently, of course, witches consist of bored soccer moms and angsty teenagers. Go figure a tragic spell, with such power would be used for this.

As the woman, fumed over her boyfriends infidelity and two faced behavior, she could only imagine whatever humorous manifestation he would be.

The images mostly rhymed with "ick" and had face tagged on the end.

She had no idea what she would really unleash.
