Daryl watched from a distance as the sisters sprinted towards each other, genuinely worried they might damage themselves in the collision. He couldn't stop the grin from forming though as they embraced, holding on so tightly he was sure they'd leave bruises as happy tears streamed down their faces. He almost felt intrusive watching the touching scene, but as he looked around the camp he noticed the other members of their group had gathered around to watch the reunion as well. After suffering so much loss they needed this.
The sisters pulled back from the embrace to study each others features as though reassuring themselves that this was truly happening and not just another dream or hallucination. Maggie looked past the scars, barely giving them notice in this moment, 'that can wait for later' she decided. Her lips trembled though as she scanned her younger sister's face, her hands tenderly brushing away the wisps of blonde hair that framed it. She saw those big blue orbs so full of warmth and hope, 'just like daddy's.' In that moment, the atmosphere suddenly shifted and Maggie's tears of joy transformed into a heart-wrenching sob,
"He's gone Beth. He's really gone." Maggie wept clutching her sister for support. The realization hit Daryl like a ton of bricks, 'Hershel.'
Daryl felt the sting of tears and willed himself to look away from the women, feeling overwhelmed by the display of grief. He realized they never had a moment together to mourn their father's death. No funeral, not even a burial. Hershel had been such a substantial loss for them all, but he couldn't begin to imagine what a loss it must have been for the Greene sisters.
"No," Beth whispered with a look that reminded him of their moonshine fueled heated exchange weeks prior. She shook her head, causing the hair pulled into her signature high ponytail to sway with the movement as she clutched her sister by the shoulders.
"Don't you see?"
Her big blue doe-eyes swept around the group, who were all watching the reunion with glistening eyes of their own, she paused only momentarily when her gaze connected with Daryl's causing the familiar flutter he felt prior to their separation to come back full force, before resting her eyes back on her sister. She smiled as tears fell freely down her cheeks,
"He's not gone. Not really."
