A Chicago Fire Fanfiction By Millie55

"Hi, I'm Kelly and I'm an alcoholic."

In an instant, the weight the was baring on the fireman's shoulders had been lifted. One confession in a room full of strangers brought relief. This brought a smile to his face. His first, genuine smile since he started drinking. "It started out as pain meds - morphine mostly - a year or so ago after I hurt my shoulder in a fire. I worked through that, but now I drink. Every day after shift only to return for my next shift hungover." Kelly let out a sigh, as his mind fell on the reason for his dependence on drink. "I started-" He cut himself off as his voice grew weak, a dull ache growing Shay. She was the reason. She left him. Left the world. With no warning. It wasn't fair. She left a void in his life. No amount of alcohol could fill it. "It happened when my best friend died."

A muffle of apologies left the mouths of those in attendance. Taking a breath, Severide found his seat unable to continue. He had taken a giant step towards recovery. Now, he would have to take it one day at a time.

The small hand of the young brunette sitting beside him found his shoulder in a supportive squeeze. She said nothing as her warm features looked over him with a supportive smile. He then felt confident in his choice to move on from his struggles. He went to speak to her, but she had already removed herself from the meeting remaining completely anonymous.
