Distorted Lullabies
by SMYGO4EVA

Being a full-time nurse and mom was the least dangerous job that June had ever occupied. It kept her busy, as she wanted to help people and also put food on the table for Jack. Her son was the only person who meant the world to her, but at times she wanted to lash out, to lash in- to beg for her husband, Jack's father to come back. She hadn't seen him in such a long time, and she needed help every now and then.

June was a nurse because she has a duty to help people. That was what she reminded herself every time. It still didn't make things easier. She still couldn't believe that Jack became involved with an alien civil war, which evil men wanted to profit from.

She still didn't want to remember when she was taken by the man named Silas. It felt so unreal, where she was wild and wriggling out of grasp, taking in every other breath. Images overwhelmed her: a jagged scar on his face, silver hair, baleful purple eyes, a small endless void, green and orange armory, and then cold, unfeeling steel. There was light cracked between two mirrors in the dead of night, a sense of dread, the men staring her down, Silas staring her down, and her heartbeat becoming louder than her own ragged breath.

She refused to recollect him, as he was too close to killing her and Jack. He still was out there, still might try to take Jack away. Jack was safe, especially with Arcee protecting him and his friends. But it chilled her unpleasantly, and she focused on the present instead, far from yesterday's dreams.

Those hands she soon held were too heavy, too rough to be Jack's.

June thought she could scream then and there.

His voice soon became one of many of her distorted lullabies.
