Introduction

"Abruptly Amy: The Spinoff That... Was" is not the Driven Wild Universe. In fact, it is the Anti-Driven Wild Universe. Whereas the DWU tries to flesh out characters' personalities, AA tries to subvert them. If you cannot tolerate the thought of reading a fanfic that does not resemble a "Daria" episode, and have only clicked on the AA link because you saw my name beside it, I recommend you click away now and spare yourself the pain.

"Abruptly Amy" is based on the following:

1) What would happen if we found out that fanfic's reverent vision of Amy Barksdale, already based on thin evidence, was completely unfounded? Completely... completely unfounded.

2) What would happen if MTV wanted to keep the "Daria" gravy train going after its cancellation, and green-lighted a spinoff show revolving around a minor character? And if the spinoff idea got horribly botched because the new producers only cared about ratings and demographics, rather than character development and continuity?

3) Suppose seven respected "Daria" fanfic authors decided to take a break from the pressures of their hobby and poke fun at deplorable trends in fanfiction and mainstream entertainment?

If none of this appeals to you, click away. NOW.

Otherwise... "Abruptly Amy" is a spinoff show told in several episodes, including the "pilot." These episodes were written by myself, C.E. Forman, John Berry, John Takis, Crazy Nutso, Mike Quinn, and Milo Minderbender. We use pretty transparent aliases under each episode's title. If you'd like to find out why, read the AA FAQ at Outpost Amy (see the link below). In fact, to understand the logic behind "Abruptly Amy," I recommend you read the FAQ, then "In Search of Amy -- The Making of the Pilot Episode," then the pilot episode, then the regular episodes. Then, before running back to this site to spew your outrage, I recommend you go through every facet of the Outpost Amy website: read the Author's Notes, the silly promos and character bios; have a look at the merchandise.

"Outpost Amy", run by the fictional character Amy Terwilliger, is as much a part of the "Abruptly Amy" fanfics as are the postscripts and fan art. Lastly, let me point out that "Abruptly Amy" is silly. Very, very silly. If you find yourself offended by its portrayal of the characters, then you're probably taking it too seriously. And since, some of you will be, I can only say that if fanfics were like artwork, the Driven Wild Universe would be portraits while "Abruptly Amy" would be abstract art. Some might call it brilliant. Some might call it garbage. Some might call it brilliant garbage.

We'll just have to see.
