The gentle strum of Blaine's guitar along with a quiet supporting band rippled through the calm silence that had descended on the hall. The space was light and airy with a large skylight opening up the ceiling, exposing the sky, and in any other situation, the occupants may have taken the time to admire the subtle beauty the place held. But now, a tall blonde boy was stood in front of the band, his head bowed and his hands linked loosely in front of him. He took a deep breath and looked up.
You escape like a runaway train
Off the tracks and down again
Green eyes looked to the right and lingered on the fine wooden casket. He blinked as a stinging sensation started to prickle at the back of his eyes.
And my heart's beating like a steamboat tugging
All your burden, on my shoulders
Logan looked back to the mass of people filling and spilling out of the room. Familiar faces stood out; a stricken Derek in the front pew along with Julian's silently weeping mother and father, tears streaming down both of their faces. And of course Julian's fellow cast mates from Something Damaged who carried expressions of shock and pain. Logan took another deep breath, his eyes looking skyward, through the skylight towards an endless clear blue sky.
And in the mourning, I'll rise
In the mourning, I'll let you die
In the mourning, all my worry
Logan cracked. A single tear traced its way down his cheek which bared cuts and bruises; memories of that tragic night. It ran along his jawline before it plummeted down.
And now there's nothing but time that's wasted
And words that have no backbone
Now it seems like the whole world's waiting
Can you hear the echoes fading?
More tears dared to follow the first, as Logan sang the lyrics with all the meaning and emotion he could conjure. The song meant so much to him; it let him convey the feelings and thoughts he couldn't bare to speak. The words he never imagined would have to be said.
And in the mourning, I'll rise
In the mourning, I'll let you die
In the mourning, all my sorry
Logan closed his eyes as he sang the next verse. The words left him with such sad beauty, the melody spilling into the room with a power that held so much pain, regret and longing for an impossible future threaded through.
And it takes all my strength
Not to dig you up, from the ground in which you lay
The biggest part of me
You were the greatest thing
And now you're just a memory to let go of
Logan's grip tightened on his own hands as he glanced at the group of Dalton boys who had known Julian, seated together close to Derek, the differences between their houses and each other put aside.
In the mourning, I'll rise
In the mourning, I'll let you die
In the mourning, all my sorry
Logan's voice cracked slightly as he simply glanced over the crowd of people, his gaze settling on to the casket that held his best friend again. The backing instrumentals quietened down to the soft plucking of Blaine's guitar.
So in the morning, I'll rise
In the morning, I'll let you die
In the morning, all my sorry.
The song quietened to an end. Logan's cheeks glistened as more and more tears rolled down his face, the singer not moving to wipe them away.
Logan nodded his head and whispered a quiet good bye. A good bye that could never be acknowledged by the boy with sepia eyes.
His final farewell.
