Light clouds slowly fluttered across the sky as Kairi stood on the shore of her beloved island, staring out at the horizon as she did every day it seems, trying to remember Him. What was it about Him that was so hard to remember? Kairi shut her eyes tightly closed as she strained to think of His face. It was hopeless. A cool, soft breeze blew Kairi's long, auburn locks over her sapphire eyes.
Kairi looked to the horizon, and she recalled the promise she had made to Him. She nearly began to cry as she looked down at the sand and mouthed His exact words:
"I'll come back for you, I promise…"
Suddenly Kairi looked up at the never-ending sea with a gasp as His name flickered in her head.
"… So… ra…"
As if His name were of a magic quality, it was already sunset. A large blur began to appear over the water as the sky rained occasional fireflies, soon becoming frequent. The light above the water glowed beautifully with mystery. Soon Kairi could see a human-like and shadowy figure seeming to crawl out of the strange glow. The blurry silhouette gradually grew closer and clearer. In mere moments Kairi was able to better make out the spiky-haired figure as color and texture faded into it. It was a young man.
He appeared to have a fatal injury; he was dramatically clutching his side as he managed to drag himself along with a giant key. His face was shrouded with shadows, but Kairi could right away see just who he was.
"Sora!" Kairi shouted. Sand and salt water splashed everywhere as she ran into the ocean to meet the boy she had been waiting for. As she approached Him, she could better see that He was not completely solid; He was transparent with a sparkly blue aura outlining His features. She also realized that there was no blood dripping from His wound… nothing was there but blue light.
"Sora…" Kairi looked into His deep, hurting ocean blue eyes full of suffering as she began to break down in tears. "I've… I've missed you so much! I can't believe… I can't believe that it's actually you! I couldn't remember anything…
"But you're back now and we still can't be together! You're dead… You're dead! How are you here!?"
His heavy breathing continued as He said, "Kairi…" He painfully reached into His pocket and held out to her a shaking hand clasped around a familiar bottle. She gasped a loud sob and carefully took the bottle and realized that inside was her lucky charm she had given to Him when she was younger.
"I had to keep my promise," He said softly. Kairi once again began to cry. Tears streamed down her face as she noticed that He was beginning to fade.
"Sora… Sora, you can't go! You can't leave me!" She quickly pulled Him into a forceful hug, her dropped tears leaving rings on His lit back as water does.
In between gasping sobs she managed to breathe out, "I love you."
In an instant, He disappeared in her arms, leaving her alone to cry. Her shaking fingers dropped the bottle in the water. It was now dark out; fireflies were still floating around aimlessly. The moonlit water reflected the light on her face. Kairi slowly opened her eyes. The first and only thing that she saw was - written on the water in the same blue aura found on Him earlier - the words she had longed to hear back from Him:
"I love you too, Kairi."
