Time : My Enemy by Tansy 1354

Summary : This was written for the Middle Earth Express

Prompt #34: Enemy

Under the name of Anise

Enemies come in all shapes and sizes, but there is one that nearly everyone will face at some time that not even heroes can slay.

In Minas Tirith the golden haired elf looked out over the parapet at the far distant mountains as he contemplated the sunrise.

His mind once more pondering the subject of time, how it was measured and how it acted in his life.

Brought up amongst the elves and the trees, time passed slowly allowing reflection and understanding of things and people. It was accepted that with time and age came wisdom and that truly great things like the massive trees of the forests of Middle Earth or the mountains in front of him, recorded it's passing in more than one way. While seasons measured the segments, the years passing took care of the rest.

For elves time was a friend that gave comfort and meaning to their world, but to Legolas Greenleaf this was not the case. Legolas had travelled much and found time had a different meaning to the many peoples he met.

The golden archer had in a way chosen to make time his enemy, the day he became Estel now King Elessar's friend. Now he measured the days and years by a mortal's clock.

Had it only been mere months ago that he had set out for Rivendell to take his father's message to Lord Elrond. Had it only been mere months ago that he had first met those that would become his staunchest friends. Perhaps for Estel too, it had been a case of time being an enemy, driving him relentlessly on in the pursuit of a reluctant destiny.

It had taken only a few moments in elven time to forge the unbreakable bonds of friendship that the Fellowship shared, and then perhaps his bond of brotherhood with Elessar would be counted in months.

No Legolas Greenleaf knew that time would always be his enemy while he counted mortals as his most trusted friends. This enemy would be cruel indeed, making him watch as their lives ended before his. He had never run away from an enemy before and he did not intend to start now, no he would fight this enemy with everything he had and most of all with the love he could bestow on those that would be taken by his war with time. A war that he knew ultimately he could not be won.
