This story, and I say story only because its too long for a drabble or double drabble, was something I've been toying around with for a while. I really wanted to do a wedding night story, so this is it. This was the first version of my "Shadows and Dancing" story.
DO
NOT DISTURB
"Do
Not Disturb." To anyone just walking down the hall, the sign on
the door might bring a snicker or maybe not even a second glance. To
those who know who is behind door #1003, it is brings a sigh of
relief.
Behind the door, a trail of cast off clothing is evidence of the night's earlier activities. Shoes and socks are haphazardly thrown on the floor. A black tuxedo lays crumbled between the floor and the corner chair. A light peach beaded gown lies at the foot of the bed.
A shadow passes over the shoes. As it moves across the floor, the moon coming throught the picture window reveals the silhouette of a couple dancing in it's light. There is no audible music playing, but somehow the same song is playing in both their heads. In the moonlight, she moves her hand from his shoulder to his neck. He holds her close as her flannel pajama top brushes his chest. What a pair they make. Her hair is a unkept and his matching pajama bottoms are tied loosely at the waist.
As they dance, he takes her hand and lifts it above her head. With his hand on her slim waist, he gives her a gentle push. As she slowly twirls around him, a sparkle can be seen as the dim light bounces off the new wedding ring on her left hand. The twirling stops and she lands safely once again in his arms. He hugs her from behind placing a soft peck on her cheek. He slowly spins her out again and then quickly pulls her toward him. He leads her in his trademark quick spin and then dips her with as much Fred Astaire grace as he can muster. As he readjusts his footing to pull her back up, he trips on one of the shoes. They both fall to the floor out of reach of the moonlight.
In the dark, they laugh out loud. After a few minutes of silence, a new whispered song is heard. "Climb every mountain..."
He giggles deeply and says, "Your mother knows you so well."
