The smell of book binding glue and the feel of stiff paper beneath his fingers were two of David Karofsky's favorite things in the world. It was why he could never really allow himself to surrender to the e-book and Kindle reader fads; there was just something comforting about the heft of the printed word in his hand that was never going to be replicated by ultra-light LCD screens and whirring gadgetry.

He hadn't touched this book in particular in years. Dave remembered receiving it as a birthday present when he turned eleven. The fad of Harry Potter had swept his elementary school earlier than that, with Dave standing in stubborn opposition to reading it because everyone else liked it. This, to his little kid-self, had tipped him off immediately that it was obviously lame as hell. His father had insisted he give it a shot, however, if only to please whatever relative it had been who had sent it to him. Soon after cracking open the covers Dave had surrendered himself to the thrall of the magical world and devoured the books one by one.

Soon after starting junior high, thought, Dave had taken the books and shoved them all under a packing box in the bottom of his closet. What had once been an escape seemed like a mockery of him then. Harry had his friends to help him, no matter the trouble, friends who didn't make fun of puberty or weight or make him scared of that weird twinge in the locker room; Dave didn't have anyone like that.

"Dave, c'mon, you're almost to the best part," said Dave's favorite thing in the world, the one thing that would always top paper and the smell of old books. Sam peered up at Dave with that goofy full-lipped grin that never failed to make him weak in the knees, eyes bright beneath his bangs.

Dave smiled and kissed Sam's temple as his boyfriend snuggled against him. He had been a bit perplexed when Sam had asked Dave to read aloud to him, but Sam had insisted, blushing prettily as he admitted he loved the sound of Dave's voice when he read. Dave had been pretty much helpless to resist after that, digging frantically in his closet for the books that he knew both of them would enjoy. It was because of Sam, because of this, Dave thought as he cleared his throat to begin again, that he'd finally been able to face his favorite series again.

"'But from that moment on,'" he read, flushing pleasantly as Sam nuzzled into his shoulder to get more comfortable, "'Hermione Granger became their friend. There are some things you can't share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them…'"
