The rain fell lightly from the sky, transforming the warm summer night in a game of lights and reflections.
The moon, who seemed to reign over its kingdom of small stars shone a soft light over the lonely man who sat in the grass.
His blonde hair reaching his shoulders, wet from the tears falling from the sky stuck to the sides of his face. A few strands of hair moved at the rhythm of the wind who sang a calm melody over the ship.
Everything seemed in perfect harmony on the Mudwhale, sailing across an infinite sea of sand since the beginning of time. But in this symbiosis of nature and humankind, the thoughts of the young man seemed to disturb the calm night.
You and me, we're the same! We will always be stuck in this suffocating loneliness!
The words he pronounced hours ago still bounced in his head, while he breathed the sweet parfume of wet grass and soil. Those were the words he told Ouni; the only person who could understand him, who was like him. Both being daimonas, those creatures born to destroy, for the sole purpose of saving their source of life and energy; Phalaina, the heart of the ship.
Their only destiny was an endless loneliness. Shuan knew that one day, the Children of the Mudwhale would end their exile. That day marking the beginning of a new life in which he would stay alone on this floating island, cursed to be abandoned by the folk he had to protect. The folk who gave him a reason to be and to exist, in a world where he didn't know who he was.
Shuan.
The name his mother gave him when he first saw the light of day. But who was the person hiding behind it ? What was his personality ? His dreams? His fears? His ambitions ?
Shuan didn't know. He only knew one single thing. He was born to protect the mud whale. Even if it meant giving his life.
The times where he knew who he was where long finished and behind him. That time where this man was only a little boy, innocent. When he trusted his friends. After all, his own mother put him through this pain, his own existence, in a world he didn't belong, except in some fairytales of foreign countries who told the story of these inhumane demons and the cursed inhabitants of Phalaina.
Even Lady Taisha, who saw him grow up didn't interrupt or save Shuan from the fate the elders chose for him. Instead, she was the one discovering how to create these demons and leading him to the day they bound his soul to the life and spirits of the inhabitants of the island.
There are times when all the world's asleep
The questions run too deep
For such a simple man
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
Please tell me who I am
The rain continued to fall, coating everything in a shimmering light while the blonde man looked up in the sky, wondering if he shouldn't have been born at all.
If he could turn back time, would he change history's flow?
Would he choose a normal but short life, with the opportunity to ever experience true happiness ?
But this didn't change his current life. He was alone. He would forever be alone.
Shuan got on his feet. His eyes still captured by the moon who was as alone in the dark sky as he was on earth. The moon had its loyal stars, but no other moon at its sides.
Was he like the moon?
In this case the young man would continue to protect his stars.
The children of the whales.
