A Father Figure?

It was a calm twilight. The seas rolled up and down steadily as they always do. The seagulls were starting to disappear with the coming of dusk. From here it was a long way back to Windfall or Outset, or any island decent enough to spend the night.

The King of Red Lions drifted along, rising and falling with the waves. His sail was in, for sailing this night would be of no use. Link was tired.

The Hero was lying down, leaning against the edge of the boat. He yawned sleepily, stretching a bit then rubbing his eyes. It had been a hard day, fighting in the volcano of Dragon Roost Isle, and even Heroes need their rest. And King of Red Lions could understand that.

"Well, Link, we should be safe around here tonight," the boat said after surveying the area. He knew the waters were known to have sharks every once in a while, and other dangerous monsters were also often about. But luckily, this expanse of sea seemed okay.

Link nodded, his eyes closed. He wanted to get to sleep as soon as possible.

"We should set off again as soon as the first hint of sun shows," the boat continues. He was always serious about this quest.

"We should rest like this more often. You hardly ever let me return home or anything." Link leaned back on his hands.

King of Red Lions turns his head around to Link. "You're lucky. Some heroes never get a break. You're the one who's going to save the world..."

"And to do that, I need lots of rest. I can't fight tired, you know."

"You could always use a fairy."

"Sleep is nice..."

"And besides, you make it sound like I don't try to make this the easiest possible for you. Why, when it rained that one night, who let you use his sail to cover you up?"

Link sighs. "You did..."

"And when you got sick that other day and we couldn't get a Blue Potion soon enough, who took care of you until we found a Blue Chuchu?"

"You did..."

"Right. I do a lot for you."

"I don't disagree..." Link yawns.

"Why, one could say I'm like a father to you."

Link sits up a bit. "..." He had so far thought of King of Red Lions as just a travel companion. But when he thinks of it, he could be sort of a 'father figure'...

"What? Don't you think so?" He grins, his mouth creaking.

"...Whatever you say." With a grin, Link lays back again.

With a creak, the boat turns his head forward again, still grinning also.

"Good night, 'Dad'," Link says before falling asleep.

King of Red Lions snickers. "Good night, 'son'."

With the last of the gulls crying in the distance, the night set in, the moon full and bright in the sky.
