AN: Okay guys, so this is a quick little one-shot I wrote during class today because I didn't really feel like paying attention. The song is Chasing Pavements by Adele

DISCLAIMER: I do not own any part of Castle, blah, blah, blah... we all know the drill.

Because of Always

I've made up my mind,

Don't need to think it over.

If I'm wrong I am right,

Don't need to look no further.

This ain't lust,

I know this is love.

Castle watched her on the plane, dozing and hopefully having sweet dreams. He loved watching her. She was captivating. Mesmerizing, even. She looked so much at peace when she slept, like everything was right in her world. Her coppery locks had fallen in her face, and he pushed them back behind her left ear. Her soft lips were parted in a slight 'o'.

He had known or some time he was head over heels in love with Kate Beckett. He had never actually thought it over; he hadn't felt the need. Because he knew he'd made the right choice. He didn't just want her body anymore, he wanted her quirks, and her perks. He wanted the way she snores every so often in her sleep, her smile, the way her eyes light up when she talks to someone she loves, and her stubbornness. He wanted all of that, but most importantly, he wanted her heart.

But if I tell the world,

I'll never say enough,

'Cause it was not said to you,

And that's exactly what I need to do,

If I end up with you.

He'd written letters addressed to her telling her how he feels, and he'd told her he loved her in his books, but the letters hadn't been sent, and the hints in his books were too subtle for anyone but himself to notice. He knew at some point he needed to tell her, but she was still with that doctor. However, he knew anything else he said would never be enough. Hell, he'd written her two whole books and it still hadn't been enough.

Should I give up,

Or should I just keep chasing pavements?

Even if it leads nowhere.

Or would it be a waste?

Even if I knew my place,

Should I leave it there?

She wasn't ready yet, and Castle knew it. Kate wasn't ready to move out of her comfort zone. He didn't know when she would be, either. But someday, hopefully, she will be ready. He'd waituntil the end of the world if he had to.

His mother had told him he had enough research to write fifty books, and logically, she was right. Somewhere, deep inside his mind, was asking if he should have just moved on and given up. But the rest of his head and all of his heart told him to wait it out. To stay with her and eventually it would pay off. Maybe he's stupid, but he just can't give up.

Kate started to stir and ended up resting her head on his shoulder.

I build myself up,

And fly around in circles.

Waiting as my heart drops,

And my back begins to tingle.

Finally, could this be it?

Rick tensed up at first, thinking she would most likely have killed him when she woke, but he didn't mind. He just wrapped his arm around her and rested his head on top of hers, inhaling the wonderful scent of cherries.

An hour later, Rick woke up. Kate was shifting slightly, still in his arms. She wakes up and looks into his eyes. He felt as if those gorgeous green eyes were staring right into his soul. They flickered down to his lips, but only for a second.

"Castle," she whispered.

"Hmm?" he said back, his voice just as soft.

"Thank you," she said, "for following me to L.A. I couldn't have done this without you."

"Of course," he replied, "always."

And because of one word, because of always, he will not give up. He will continue chasing pavements because he made a promise. The promise of always.
