She couldn't believe it.

She wouldn't believe it.

There was no possible way that Shinichi could just die like that. After nearly a year of absence, Shinichi had returned, just to die in a stupid freak accident.

Shinichi had just taken some time off his most recent "case" to swing by and visit Ran. He had promised to take her to the shopping plaza for a date that day. She remembered how on the way to the plaza, Shinichi charged onto the crosswalk once the pedestrian light flickered on.

There was a loud, wailing honk and a screeching of tires as an 18-wheeler just barreled out of nowhere.

The truck had hit Shinichi head on and fractured his skull, and then had accidentally rolled on top of him, crushing the bones in his limbs and his ribs. Just like that, he had died.

She remembered as she elbowed her way through the mob of people and fell to her knees next to Shinichi's limp, bloodied body. A cascade of salty tears rolled down her face and dripped onto Shinichi's face, diluting the blood to a pale, watery shade of pink.

First came the disbelief.

Then came the flashbacks.

"Sorry, Ran!! Go on ahead of me!! I'll catch up with you right away!"

"Stupid, don't cry!"

"Get well soon!"

Ran could hear his voice comforting her, could feel his arms wrapped around her in a secure embrace, and could feel his warm breath against her neck.

Her breath catching in her throat, Ran wrapped Shinichi in her arms, not caring about the dark crimson blood that stained her clothes. As she cradled Shinichi in her arms, more tears cascaded down her face, dripping off of her chin. Out of nowhere, a pair of strong arms pulled her upwards, away from Shinichi's corpse.

"Ran…I'm so sorry…"

It was Heiji. The High School Detective of the East had invited the High School Detective of the West to a double date, and Heiji brought Kazuha. A few tears had begun to leak out of the corners of Kazuha's eyes, and Heiji's eyes were full of unshed tears.

Ran hugged Heiji and sobbed into his shoulder, soaking the sleeve of his sweater. A few of Heiji's tears rolled down his face.

Ran knew how hard Heiji must have been taking this. After all, he was Shinichi's best friend and unofficial partner. But his pain was nothing compared to hers.

It felt like a hole had been punched through her heart as her future shattered around her. For years, she had dreamed of marrying Shinichi and starting a family together, but now, the possibility of that had diminished.

She had read stories of accidents like these happening. But the characters involved in these accidents had always barely survived the accident and died in the arms of their loved ones, leaving their loved ones only after telling them goodbye.

Shinichi had left her once without saying farewell. But he returned a few times and called her every now and then.

This time…this time was different.

Because this time, he left and wasn't coming back…

For he was dead and gone.
