Ponyboy knows a lot of things.

He knows the definition of copious, jejune, and winnow.

He knows what kind of beer Two Bit likes best and that Steve is better at putting together carburetors than engines.

He also knows he can always talk to Sodapop. That after the death of his parents, Soda was the one he could go to, explain his fears.

Some things Ponyboy is beginning to realize he knows nothing about.

Taxes. How to feed growing boys on a small salary. Worries bigger than the next science test.

He knows nothing about what it feels like to be so close to a dream, and have it ripped away, with no one to blame but a smashed car.

Ponyboy sees a lot of things.

He sees his brother and his brother's best friend flirt with girls, flashing smiles as they pump gas and bring in business.

He sees Dally chain smoking on his porch after getting a black eye from Tim Shepard.

But just because he sees things doesn't mean he understand them.

He sees gravestones.

He sees anger from people that don't know how lucky they are to have someone as great as Johnny in their lives.

He sees these things, but he doesn't understand them, cannot comprehend.

There are a lot of things that Ponyboy hears.

Laughter. Cursing. Wind rushing past him on a run.

There's a lot of things Ponyboy wishes he can hear again.

His mother humming. His father teasing.

Darry laughing.

There's a lot of things Ponyboy doesn't know.
