He Who Sees Victory

Letters From The Cutting Edge

[1] Zangetsu

He sees victory.

He sees his enemies and in a single moment of clarity he knows how to defeat them. He is the vicious steel, the unrelenting resolve, the catalyst of change. When all is lost he is the sword that delivers death.

It was not always like that. In the beginning he was but a sliver of an idea – a mare fish in the ocean. Back then, in those dark days, he did not have a face for he knew not what he was. He was an undefined being. He lacked purpose.

He didn't even have a name.

But as with all things, he changed. In time, he grew and his formless being had a shape. He became strong and he knew, from the moment he had received his shape, that he was not made to fight – but to defeat.

Later still, he realized that he was also made to protect.

His surroundings changed also. The black abyss morphed into a beautiful city: there were skyscrapers – majestic pieces of steel and glass – and the sun, which sat upon the sky like a crown of a king. During those days, he took pleasure in standing atop the highest building and watching over his domain. Sometimes it would rain and he would shiver in the cold, trying to find shelter in one of the concrete constructs.

At some point, the black color that has been his form became a coat. It covered his whole body and it made him feel warm. He also received sunglasses and through those, he gazed up, hoping to see his name written in the sky.

He does not ponder now upon such matters. He does not look at the sky nor does he observe his domain. Such things are unnecessary now, for he knows his purpose well and he has abandoned his fear. There is always another battle, always something to protect. To look back is to show weakness. To hesitate is to die. He uses more and more of his power but he is content – he moves forward. It doesn't rain and through his sunglasses, he sees only one thing.

He is Zangetsu and he sees victory.

Always.
