Paige and Erica Reed had been together since before they were born, and the deepest friendship to show for it. Abandoned by their mother before they could even talk, all they had had in the entire world was each other and their father. They never argued, and never disagreed on anything.
Except now.
"Erica, I'm begging you," Paige pleaded, "For the sake of your daughter, don't do this!"
"I have to Paige!" Erica yelled, "We owe it to him!"
"Leave it to the police," Paige said. "Don't ruin you life like this!" Paige took her sister's hand, careful not to disturb the IV in her arm.
"She needs you," Paige gestured to the sleeping baby in the crib next to the bed, "I need you!"
"She'll be fine," Erica said, "Danny's a good guy, he'll take care of her."
"Don't do this to her," Paige said, "You know what it's like not to have a mother."
"Why are you so sure I'll go to jail?" Erica said, her blue eyes flashing angrily, "What if I don't get caught?"
"Oh please," Paige laughed harshly. Unable to sit in that damn chair anymore, Paige stood up and began pacing the room. "You're going to get caught, if they don''t get you on murder they'll get you on illegal weapons. Dad's methods were effective, but not exactly legal."
"Then I'll go to jail," Erica said, "I don't care, I have to do this. I can't believe you won't come with me."
"You're so fucking stubborn," Paige screamed, "and selfish! I need you, she needs you," Paige gestured wildly to the baby, who would probably wake up if she didn't stop shouting. Erica let out a dry snort.
"Please, you're going to the academy," Erica said, "With your brains and experience, you're going to graduate top of your class for sure. You don't need anyone Paige."
"Then do it for her," The baby had woken up, Paige lifted her gingerly, cradling her in her arms. "Do it for- what are you going to call her anyway?"
"I have no clue," Erica said. "I suck at picking names, I named all of my goldfish as a kid Goldie. You name her."
"Really?" Paige asked, sitting back down, "You seriously want me to name her?"
"Why not?" Erica said, shrugging her shoulders, "I know you'll pick a good one. She deserves a good name."
"What about Sophie?" Paige suggested.
"Are you sure?" Erica asked. "You've had that name picked out since you were twelve, you love that name."
"I love you more," Paige said. "And it suits her, she looks like a Sophie. I won't be having any kids if I'm a DEA Agent anyway, may as well give it to her."
"Let me hold her," Paige settled the baby in Erica's arms.
"Erica," Paige began, "If you're really going to do this you know what has to happen."
Erica nodded for her to continue, they both knew what she was going to say.
"I have to change my name, we can't be related," Paige said, "Because as sure as you are that you won't get caught, you're going to. I can't be a federal agent with a sister who's a convict. That also means I won't be there for her, are you sure you're still going to go after those guys?"
"You were there Paige," Erica said, "You saw what they did to him. Yes, I'm going to do this." Paige nodded and stood up slowly,
"Then goodbye Erica," she said. "Goodbye Sophie." Paige walked out of the hospital room and down the hall, she didn't look back.
