Alexander drank until he went blind. Life was not worth living anymore, he had decided. Not without Hephaestion. Stumbling to his chambers, the chambers he and Hephaestion had so often shared, Alexander lay down to sleep.
He slept lightly, tossing and turning. Finally, a feather-like breeze fell on his cheek. However he knew it was not the wind that had woken him. He knew it was Hephaestion.
He finally settled on his side and opened his eyes slowly to see Hephaestion laying in the bed beside him, carding his fingers through his blond hair.
"Phai..." he murmured, not fully awake yet, "You came back..."
"Of course I did, Love. I come back every night," his voice soft so as not to startle his soulmate, Hephaestion smiled gently.
It was true; he did come back every single night, from the night he died to now. Sometimes they just laid in bed together. Other times they talked in whispers until dawn, when Hephaestion had to return to the Elysian Fields. Still other times they made love until the sun peeked over the mountaintops.
"So tired..." Alexander moaned.
"I know, Love. Take your time waking up. It is still early."
Hephaestion began to sing a wordless tune, the sound happy and light, to help Alexander wake up.
Once Alexander was awake, he sighed relaxedly, "Thank you."
"I am always here for you, Love."
"I miss you," Alexander cuddled closer to Hephaestion.
Alexander entangled his legs with Hephaestion's, a sign Hephaestion had long ago learned meant, "Make love to me."
Hephaestion eased Alexander onto his back amongst his many pillows.
"Phai..." Alexander sighed.
"Hush, Xander."
"I miss you, so much," unshed tears glistened in Alexander's eyes.
"I miss you too, Love. I wish I was here with you still. But we're here now, so no tears."
Alexander woke the next morning, only to find himself alone. Tears cascading down his cheeks, he had a drink.
That night, he fell into an alcohol-induced coma. Not eating well plus the coma allowed a fever to set in. When Hephaestion arrived that night, Alexander was awake, shaking with his fever.
"Phai..." Alexander quieted as a violent set of shakes took over his body.
"Shh, Xander," Hephaestion put a hand to his lover's forehead, at which Alexander sighed in relief.
"Cold... Phai..."
"I'm right here. I'm not leaving you."
Hephaestion stayed those whole twelve days, taking care of Alexander as he laid on his deathbed.
Finally, on June tenth, Alexander begged Hephaestion for relief. Hephaestion gave it to him quickly, not wanting to see his soulmate suffer any longer. He guided Alexander to the Elysian Fields, where they spent their afterlife together, just as they had their time on Earth.
