Minerva McGonagall just stared at the ground where he lay. She had no other choice. It was as if her brain, her limbs, and her vocal cords had all abruptly stopped working.

Then a scream pierced the night, and she was not aware until people told her the next day that it belonged to her. "ALBUS! NOOOO! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? YOU MONSTERS!!!" The scream sounded as though it's issuer were possessed. No one had heard anything like it before, and few experienced one the same in the remainder of their lives. It was saturated in immeasurable pain and grief.

The crowd around her stared, as if petrified, open mouthed, wide eyed, and wrought with horror. It was as though they had witnessed a gruesome train accident and could bare neither to watch or look away. She hit her knees before anyone realized what was happening, and before they could make a move to help her, she flung herself across his chest. Sobs that tore at the soul and broke the heart pierced the silent air, and not even the Death Eaters made a sound. She sounded like she was dying with him, for him, over him.

How will I go on without you? Why are you leaving me now? We should have told people about us so long ago. We're supposed to grow old and die together. Now I'll just be old and alone. I can't do this…

They all watched as she drew the silver chain around her neck from the front of her robes, slipping it over her head and undoing the clasp. She removed two rings that hung from it, obviously a wedding set, and slipped them onto her ring finger.

"You must have all realized the very obvious truth of the nature of my relationship with the head master by now," she said softly, her voice breaking as she walked away. No one followed her. No one could. They were still rooted to the spot, many of them sobbing softly.

No one was surprised to watch her fall from the tower.

They all just moved silently aside.

To gaze upon her peaceful form next to her lover's, one would have imagined she was dreaming happy dream, free from the sorrow and cold truth that had become her life.
