John stared at the Stanford envelope in his hand and took a few calming breaths. Sam wouldn't leave them; would never leave Dean. John was sure there was some other explanation for the letter because Sammy would never leave his family like that. They needed him and he needed them.
Apparently, John was wrong.
"I'm going and you can't stop me," Sam told his father after being confronted about the letter.
At the sound of a door slamming shut, John and Sam whipped around to see Dean standing at the door holding a bag of food and looking at Sam with confusion.
"Sam?"
"Dean, I -"
"I'm going out," John interrupted. He turned to Sam. "When I come back tomorrow afternoon, I want you gone. And don't bother coming back." John shut the motel room door behind him and sighed. Maybe Dean would have better luck than he did at convincing Sam to stay.
When John returned to the motel room the next day, Dean refused to speak to him and Sam was gone.
