It had been over 30 years since Germany surrendered to the Allies and was thus divided between West and East. With tensions rising between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, especially after the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan and subsequent grain embargo and boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics by the United States and its allies in response of the Soviet's invasion, Europe was on edge fearing M.A.D taking hold.
Germany during this time was at a crossroads, with the Western and Eastern part of the nation divided between the Capitalist West and Communist East. The days of Adolf Hitler and the surrender to the Allies are still fresh within the minds of the German people with them hoping another tyrant never rises again under a united Germany.
In spite of the Germany's troubled past and desire of the people to avoid it, it would come back to haunt them and leave a lasting mark on German history forever as the Rhine would once again experience invasion and be set aflame.
Not by a Warsaw Pact invasion force however but something else entirely…
Saderan Empire, Year 687 (Imperial Calendar)
The Empire has stood the test of time in Falmart. Ever since it's foundation it had weathered extremely turbulent times and had reached its peak after conquering much of the independent states on the continent.
Despite this, the Empire had rather noticeably begun experiencing a small decline with its gold supplies beginning to run dry and shortage of natural resources beginning to take shape. It also didn't help the Empire was also experiencing a human manpower shortage due to their recent conquests and vassal revolt which would need to be replenished.
It's Head of State, Emperor Molt Sol Augustus at age 70 had like his predecessors before him had to make important decisions in order to progress the Empire such as ordering the conquests of new lands.
He knew that in due time he will die and his first son Zorzal El Caesar would ascend to the throne with his second son Diablo and daughter Piña Co Lada being 2nd and last in line incase Zorzal were to die or be deemed unworthy by the Emperor. Nearing the end of his reign he accomplished the total conquest of the continent.
This next decision however stood out amongst the rest he would take.
On the Holy Hill of Alnus a magical Gate formed with its origins unknown with many believing that it was a summoning from the gods; a mere blessing for the Empire so that they may expand once again to save itself from further decline.
The Emperor had a decision to make. To send the glorious army of the Empire through the Gate? To potentially save the Empire by conquering and civilizing the lands on the other side? Or to be the one who would potentially oversee the Fall of the Empire his ancestors had built?
He knew the answer almost immediately.
"Send messengers to summon Field Marshal Servius and General Konstantine to the Throne Room. Notify the Senate about my desire to seek the lands beyond the Gate and too immediately ratify my decision." the Emperor boomed to his internal minister Marcus.
Within hours, Servius, and Konstantine presented themselves in the throne room.
"You have summoned us my King?" Asked Servius.
"Yes, I wish to seek the lands beyond the Gate that has formed on Alnus Hill. I request that you and General Konstantine muster a force that can dispatch any resistance from the natives of the other side. I also wish to mobilize the wyvern force as well and organize a parade on Alnus Hill to display our grand army."
"Will our vassal states take part too you're Majesty?"
"Only Count Formal as they are the closest to Alnus, however if you do encounter fierce resistance from the natives of this land then we will call upon them to reinforce our numbers."
"I find that unlikely your Majesty." Konstantine butted in.
"Don't underestimate our potential enemies no matter how inferior they may be Konstantine." Servius shot back. "We will begin the preparations immediately your Majesty."
"Very well." Molt said. He knew Servius' doctrine and views towards the Empire's enemies differed from Konstantine's. He was very experienced in commanding an army, and was very good at it as he lead the conquest of the Dark Elves and Warrior Bunnies and put down the Vassal Revolt.
General Konstantine is not as experienced or as wise as Servius but is a much more aggressive than him often showing his willingness to take risks which has gotten him both praise and criticism from other officers within the Imperial Army.
Nonetheless, much like Servius, Konstantine is a just as skilled tactician as Servius is and much unlike Servius believes those other then Saderans are highly inferior especially the dark elves as he took part in their subjugation.
Both Servius and Konstantine bowed to their King and left to begin their invasion plans.
Generalfeldmarschall Rommel Barracks, Augustdorf, August 20, 1980, 12:30 P.M
At Rommel Barracks, West German troops of the 21st Armored Brigade, 7th Panzer Division had very few avenues to relax and distract themselves of the Communist threat miles away. Some would relax in the various recreational rooms, go to the firing range to refine their marksmanship, tinker with their weapons or respective vehicles, or head into town or the various cities such as Münster or the Rhine-Rühr Metro Area while on their leave and mingle in the various bars or nightclubs.
A certain Berliner needed that right now in fact.
Since his battalion had arrived four days ago from Grafenwoehr Training Area where fellow German, Dutch, and American forces had finished military exercises, Gefreiter (Private) Wilhelm Shröder needed time to relax. Standing at 6'0ft, 205 lbs, and with short brown hair, Wilhelm like most able-bodied males was conscripted into the Bundeswehr, and then was selected by the Heer to begin his mandatory service.
For Wilhelm, while he missed his family in West Berlin he was happy to be out of that deathtrap considering how the Western part of the city was surrounded by Soviet and East German troops which would storm West Berlin if a war were to break out between NATO and the Warsaw Pact.
Now here was stationed in Westphalia and apart of a German Armored Brigade, ready to defend his country from an invasion from the East.
He had finished cleaning his G3 Rifle and was headed toward the recreational room to read his newspaper. He had to walk through the motor pool of the barracks which housed most of the vehicles of the 21st which consisted of the Leopard 1 and the newly commissioned Leopard 2. The rest of the vehicles consisted of the Marder IFVs, Spähpanzer Luchs armored reconnaissance vehicle and newly commissioned TPz Fuchs armored personnel carrier. There was a reason why the 7th Panzer Division was considered the backbone of the West German Army.
As he was passing through he was met by his squadmate and support gunner, Gefreiter Dominick Streiter whom was observing some of the vehicles and chatting with their crews. Hailing from Ansbach, Dominick stood at 5'11, 195 lbs, and sporting a bald haircut
"Afternoon Willy! shouted Dominick with his Bavarian accent as he jogged up to meet his friend.
"Hello Dominick, you seem to be a bit more chatty today. Which girl in town did you sleep with this time?"
"That's no way you treat a friend Willy. Besides you are just jealous of the fact I get more girls then you do." shot back Dominick with a chuckle.
"To answer your question Wilhelm, I'm just glad we are done with the exercises at Grafenwöhr."
"Weren't you happy to go back to Bavaria though?" Wilhelm asked.
"Meh, the exercises with the Dutch and Americans kinda stressed me. Not wanting to embarrass us is all considering we are the "backbone of the Heer." Dominick answered.
Out of all of the Wilhelm's squad, Dominick was the partier of the group as he took a liking to take part in Oktoberfest and other holidays.
The two walked in silence to the recreational room of their side of the Barracks.
After entering they were greeted with the smell of cigarettes, fellow soldiers chatting, and the radio playing a local radio station. The recreational room at that moment was rather deserted with a group of four playing what seemed to be poker, and two other soldiers sitting at a table whom both they were familiar with.
The two headed over to the table and both sat down.
"Schmidt, Müller." Wilhelm greeted as he got out his pipe and began reading his newspaper.
"Hello, Wilhelm and Dominik." Feldwebel Karl Schmidt greeted back with Gefreiter and marksman, Heinrich Müller greeting Wilhelm and Dominik with a modest wave before continuing to read his magazine.
"Where's the rest of the squad?" Dominik asked.
"I assume they are all in their quarters. I wouldn't blame them though since those exercises at Grafenwoehr really tired us out." Schmidt said before taking a sip of his tea.
"Hmm, hope it stays this quiet" Wilhelm remarked jokingly.
As he said that a mysterious Gate appeared on the streets of Düsseldorf and with it stepped out a foreign army from another world. What would ensue would become the deadliest attack on Germany since the end of World War II.
Welp here is my entry into the GATE community.
This idea of a Cold War GATE story featuring a rather IMO underused nation of has since February been floating in my head. It provides a certain complexity to it considering some of the equipment used in the late Cold War Era are usually allocated to reserves or decommissioned altogether and I have to find it. If there are vehicles or certain weaponry that I should be including just PM me or post it in a review.
So why West Germany and not any other Germany? Well the history of World War II and the Cold War simply interests me as I enjoy playing HOI 4 especially with the Kaiserreich mod. I honestly contemplated an Alt History Germany such as the aforementioned Kaiserreich but it would require to throw somethings out the window. And GATE fanfics featuring the Cold War are surprisingly underused considering the ideologies and geopolitics involved and the weapons used in the late 70s and early 80s with the G3, FAL still being staples in various militaries.
I will take some liberties in writing this story with the weaponry of the era and plot of GATE and use various story lines.
