The rope bit into his hands, he cursed and set his jaw against the burning throb. His mind briefly flickered to the hunt that had cost their last pair of gloves, he kicked himself for not remembering to replace them.

He thought about Sam dangling on the other end of the rope in his hands, heading down into the dark sink-hole to salt and burn the camper who died in the tunnel below.

He feels the familiar itch between his shoulder-blades. Something bad is -

He's jerked forward hard, sprawling him on his stomach, rope clutched tightly, hands bleeding.
