To Lose

As a woman from the future-future modern Tokyo (because the future Tokyo was just tacky), Kagome had become accustomed to the menial little labours of taking care of herself. She was used to tossing up whatever it was she was doing and getting ready for a big change. And then she had fallen down that stupid well and into the Feudal Era. The Sengoku Jidai. The Warring States Era.

Her modest, twenty-first century training didn't apply to the situation, and she was almost certain that she couldn't just waltz into the college and ask for a Surviving: Monks, Demons and Insane Dead Priestesses 101 class.

Kagome had learned many great things in her meagre lifetime, so paltry in comparison to those around her, but standing there in the rain, lost in the middle of the forest surrounded by huge, hunkering trees whose bear branches left the sky barren and uncovered just like her emotions, she felt that she had learned another thing.

Inhaling deeply, Kagome let her screen drop and allowed herself to feel the rain hitting her bare skin.

The tiny cry in the distance was nothing like what she felt, Kagome noticed, smiling. The insistent tugging was getting stronger, and with a sigh, Kagome gave in.

Kikyou was calling her soul back.

"Kagome!"
