Could be for just about anything, really, but I was thinking about the final battle for Harry Potter when I wrote it. Characters can be any pairing, but specifically I was thinking about Harry/Snape. Snape is the "I" Harry is the "you"

I was listening to "The Book" by Sheryl Crow when I wrote this, so the tempo/whatever of the poem is synonymous to that.

I look across the battlefield

a vastly swaying green

you look at me and I know you see

what I just cant say

Your take my hand in yours

and squeeze my fears away

I open up my mouth

and find the will to say

Promise me that when I'm gone

you'll move along

cuz buried six feet in the ground

I'm not much fun to be around

I know you'll want to linger there

dry your eyes, but don't hide your tears

and promise me that when I'm gone

you'll move along

And you looked at me

nodded your head

silence reigned

no more words to be said

Hours later I looked across the battlefield

a vast and sickly red

you looked at me and I know you saw

the truth in what I said

You took my hand in yours

and squeezed my fears away

you opened up your mouth

and found the will to say

I promise you when you're gone

I'll move along

though six feet under or above

you're sometimes no fun to be around

I'll take some time to linger there

then dry my eyes, I wont hide my tears

I promise you when you're gone,

I'll move along

But promise me

many years from now

cuz I'll join you there some day

you'll wait for me, wherever you are

starting from today.

Cuz I promise when you're gone

I'll move along

But I'll remember you and smile

and play this song

You smiled at me, squeezed my hand

our grip lingered as you turned away

and I couldn't help but smile back

and say "starting from today"

And when you fell

I took your hand in mine

we laughed at the cruel irony

as you were running out of time

You looked at me and smiled

and I knew it wouldn't be long

you said "promise when I'm gone

you'll move along"

And as I held your hand in mine

and squeezed your fears away

I looked at you and smiled

I said "Starting from today"

You promised you wouldn't linger

I find I did the same

I didn't bother to hide my tears

as my finger traced your name

I dried my eyes

on my sleeve that dreary day

then I opened up my mouth

found the will to say

I promise many years from now

I'll join you there some day

wait for me, wherever you are

starting from today

And I promise since you're gone

I'll move along

and I promise since you're gone

I'll move along.

I'll play this song and smile

and I'll move along.
