In loving memory of Priya, the beautiful girl who made me ship these two.
"Listen," Su says. "Do you hear that?"
Daphne frowns, straining her ears against the silence. Nothing.
"I don't hear anything," she says.
Su chuckles. "Really listen, Daph," she says, wrapping her arms around the other girl.
"I am!"
Daphne can't help but to grow frustrated. All she hears is silence, but Su is looking at her with expectant eyes. Typical Ravenclaw. Too observant, noticing some small detail others cannot.
Daphne groans, nuzzling against Su's shoulder. "Can I get a hint?" she asks.
Su doesn't respond. Instead, she reaches out, resting her hand on Daphne's chest. Daphne can't help but to shiver at the touch. "I said a hint," she murmurs. "But if you'd rather grope me all night, I am perfectly okay with that."
"Your heartbeat," Su says with a roll of her eyes.
"It's still there," Daphne says dryly, unsure where this is going. "Has to be, or you'd be cuddled up with a corpse."
"Smart arse Slytherin," Su mumbles. "It's in sync with mine. Listen."
Daphne can't quite distinguish the two sounds. She moves Su's hand, resting her own hand on her chest in its stead and rests her head against the other girl's chest. Sure enough, the rhythms are close. Maybe they match perfectly- she can't really tell. She doesn't pick up on the subtle differences the way her girlfriend does.
"What does that mean?"
"Nothing," Su admits. "A strange biological coincidence. But if you'd like to look at it from a non-logical standpoint, it's rather romantic, isn't it?"
Maybe it is, Daphne thinks. And maybe it doesn't mean anything, but Su has noticed it and made it sound like the most beautiful thing in the world.
Daphne curls closer, brushing her fingers through her lover's hair and listening to her heartbeat. She has never felt more loved than she does in this moment.
