New Year Surprises

Only a few minutes to go. Caitlin was stood on the beach with the rest of her new family, ear defenders covering her ears, waiting for midnight and the subsequent fireworks. Joy.

Brains came over to her. He knew better than anyone how much she hated this part of the celebrations. She simply smiled at him as she waited. She had been told earlier that day that if it got too much for her to just go back up to the house.

All of a sudden Alan started the 20 second countdown.

"20, 19, 18..."

At this, Caitlin sat down on the sand and looked up to the sky. She began to panic a little but managed to keep everything under control. Just.

"8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1!"

And then the fireworks started. Bang after bang. Some crackled, fizzed and screeched. At first Caitlin sat with her eyes closed with her hands pushing her ear defenders closer to her head. Then she felt a hand on each shoulder. Opening her eyes, she saw that John had come over too. Once again she looked up and watched as huge explosions of light and colour filled the sky.

Surprising the others, her hands dropped, she stood up and walked over to everyone else. They could all see the wonder filled eyes that the girl had become famous for. They were all fairly shocked when she removed one side of the defenders but she was quick to put it back on. It was progress for her at least.

Caitlin was incredibly tired by the time the fireworks ended and Virgil had to carry her up to bed. She was asleep before he made it to the lounge.

The next day, Scott sent off the adoption papers which would secure the girl's place in the family, and he was more than happy to see that they had been accepted. So was Caitlin, after all, she wanted nothing more than to stay.

The new year would bring new adventures, new friends and above all else, a new family.

Sorry it's a bit late, but I've been busy with celebrations and the like.
