In the night of the massacre, sasuke is not the only one who survived. Ken in order to survive, Ken unintentionally sacrifice his undeveloped sharingan. Ken used the izanagi that only mangenkyo user can use causing for his sharingan to reverted to its weakest form, Byakugan.

Ken Uchiha (8 years old) smart like any other average Uchiha, prodigy in chakra control even without the use of his byakugan and when he still don't have his byakugan,

In the day of massacre he unlocks his sharingan, thought only level 1, seeing the corpse of his parents dead.

Obito seeing the young boy slash his throat, not even waiting for the body to drop or confirm if the boy is already dead left the scene.

Ken not wanting to die unconsciously gathered all of his chakra to his left eye. Because of this even though it seems impossible he's able to use the izanagi, that only mangenkyo sharingan can be used.

Using the izanagi, Ken survived his death. Ken resurrected in the basement/library of their house unconscious for 13 hours.

Unlike any other mangenkyo user when they used the izanagi. Ken's left eye didn't become uselessly blind but reverted back to its lowest state, which is the byakugan.

Afraid in what truly happened, Ken hide his lineage. Not knowing how to proceed in his life, he read all the books, scrolls and tomes in their library with the used of the sharingan's ability memorise all of the info.

Finally deciding to become strong ninja, Ken used all of his knowledge to train. He also decided to live in orphanage.
