The full moon shone above as stars twinkled and the trees swayed in the night breeze. A pair of glowing eyes blinked away sleep, as the eerie and compelling silence of the darkness beaconed even the most skeptical night hunters. Four paws landed gracefully upon a branch of a Douglas fir, watching, waiting. An lone owl hooted in the distance. This is why she loved the night. Away from all the commotion and drama back at camp. Who needed all of that? Her ears flattened in disgust. The lies were the worst part. Just when you think you're life's going great, someone has to have secrets. Not just any old secret, but one that's not true. And about you. "Moonpaw! You still there?" Moonpaw stayed where she was for a moment, hesitating before she leaped down to her best friend, Rosepaw. "Why do you find that old tree so fascinating is beyond me." Rosepaw remarked. Moonpaw shrugged her shoulders, "It just seems natural. You know, sitting amongst the topmost branches, feeling the wind in your fur. Don't you want that?" She tipped her head to the side. Rosepaw shook her head, "I prefer the ground, thanks. Come on Moonpaw, let's get back to camp." "Ok." Moonpaw gave one last glance at the tree and padded after her friend, deep in thought. Why do I feel such a strong connection to that tree? After all, there's a million more like them. Somehow she knew that couldn't be true. There was something going on deeper than some tree, and she was going to find out. "Moonpaw! Are you half-asleep?" Rosepaw teased. Moonpaw shook her head to clear it. Now was not the time to dwell on the past. Rospaw murrowed with laughter and pointed at a puddle. Moonpaw rolled her eyes to see that her reflection was a complete mess. And she had just groomed herself too! "Ww should get some sleep," Rosepaw commented and prodded some moss with her paw, "Good night, Moonpaw. I'll train with you tomorrow!' "Night." Moonpaw whispered, barely audible.
