How to Keep Warm

~KaitlynShadowheart

"Damn it…" Joey muttered and breathed into hands once again in a futile effort to get warm. "How ya holding up Yugi'?" He said to the curled up ball not far away. Yugi mumbled something unintelligible and Joey scooted a little bit closer. "What?"

"I'm so cold…" Yugi said, barely above a whisper.

After another seemingly normal day of dueling in Duelist Kingdom, the gang settled down to camp out for the night. Yugi offered to go look for firewood, so Joey went to 'help' (protect him in case someone tried to hurt his Yugi.) The only logical explanation as to why they were now stuck in a cave trying to outlast a blizzard was that somehow Pegasus could control the weather there. That bastard. So there was Joey and Yugi, a few feet apart, each desperately trying to keep warm. Joey had tried to start a fire with the little wood they had collected, but failed epically.

"It'll be over soon, Yug'. Just hang on." Joey said more for himself than actually to try and comfort Yugi. Then a strange idea floated into Joey's mind. Something he saw in a movie once. It probably wouldn't actually work… "Yugi… could I…"

"Could you… what, Joey?" Yugi said, stopping in the middle to shiver before finishing his question. In order to try what he was thinking, Joey crawled the couple feet to where Yugi was in a corner.

"Um… this?" Joey tentatively put his arm around Yugi.

"Joey… Thanks. But… we might… share more heat… like this…?" Yugi crawled into Joey's lap, and rested his head on Joey's chest. He could hear Joey's heartbeat speed up. Joey casually responded by wrapping his arms around Yugi's small freezing form, and put his face into Yugi's spiky hair.

"Joey… if we.. freeze to death-"

"No!" Joey's head shot up. "No. Don't even dare talk like that Yugi. We'll make it out of here fine!"

"But what if we don't?" Yugi seemed to curl up smaller, if that was possible. "What if my grandpa's stuck in Pegasus' clutches forever! He's all I have left…" Yugi said the last part very quietly and trailed off at the end.

"Yugi. We will get out of here. Don't worry. We're going to get back to the gang, and we'll save Gramps. I promise you." Joey very rarely made promises, especially ones he didn't keep, so Yugi knew he wasn't lying. "And you'll always have me, Yugi."

Yugi nuzzled his face into Joey's chest. He always knew how to make him feel better. "I know." Just like that, Yugi felt warm again, in Joey's embrace.

Meh. Gotta say, I'm just glad I finished this. It would've killed me if I didn't. I have one more thing to say about this; Stories are way better as ideas in my head, rather than in my notebook or on my flashdrive. *_*
