"Playing By The Rules"

"Love is like playing the piano. First you must learn to play by the rules, then you must forget the rules and play from your heart."

A/N-I hope you like it :)

When Hermione Granger was ten years old, she was told she had to ability to play to piano very prosperously. But Hermione had no patience for the piano, because she lacked a key element: Passion and spark. She just didn't have it. As she laid in front of the fire, a tiny piece of paper folded in her hand, she reada quote she'd come to love:

"Love is like playing the piano. First you must learn to play by the rules, then you must forget the rules and play from your heart."

She held back a tear, that silently fell anyways. She was in love with Ron Weasley. And she was scared. Scared to admit that it was love, but more scared to trust in something that couldn't be proven. There wasn't a book to tell you what to do. She felt so helpless. And as she lay here on her back, she thought about that first month of piano lessons. Many words could describe that experience. Shaking, stumbling, and nervous are three of many. But just like she was seven years ago, she still is today: Frightened out of her mind. Frightened to not succeed. To fall flat on her face. To be a failure.

Don't get the wrong idea though. Hermione loved the technique of the piano. The beats, measures, and structures--it was something that she based her life on.

But once the lessons called for ear training...that's when she flew. She couldn't speak from her heart. She couldn't transfer her feeling into the music. It just wasn't possible for her. Until now.

She stood up suddenly. You can't run before you learn to walk. And she was going to face her fears head on this time. But this time, she was going to have help.

Going up the stairs two by two, she knocked crazily on the boys' dormitory door. A tired Seamus answered, liking very upset."What the-"

Hermione wasted no time in talking to Ron. She shoved aside Seamus(she reminded herself to apologize later), and found Ron in a cuddle of sheets and comforters.

"Ron!"she shrieked."Ron! Wake up!"

He rolled over, squinting."Hermione? Is this a dream?"

She tossed him his robe."C'mon Ron, put this on. I have to show you something."

Hermione let her hair hang down over her shoulders, as she and Ron silently walked through the corridors. At an early one o'clock, Hermione felt anything but tired.

"Hermione, where-"

"I found this a few days ago,"she interrupted. She took his hand, and guided him in the right direction."I'll explain everything in just a second."

The air in the room was hot, and Hermione immediately opened a window, as Ron inspected the room."What's-"

Hermione yanked off the cover, to unmask a beautiful grand piano.

Ron gave her a puzzled look."Hermione, I'm confused."

She simply sat on the piano bench, and gestured for him to join her. He took a few seconds to comprehend, but followed her demand.

"Hermione,"Ron said softly."What's this all about?"

Hermione turned to him."Play what you feel Ron,"she whispered. It was just vague enough to make him understand. He carefully began to hit random keys, as Hermione joined in. As they did so, they created a beautiful cord. As the harmonious notes filled Hermione, she started to realize something: Alone, she couldn't do. But with Ron, she could face love without being fearful. She could play and love, as long as Ron was always there beside her. She didn't have to have rules and structures anymore. She could make up her own.

She kissed him lightly, catching him off guard. He slowly returned it, both in perfect sync. Hermione knew by that first kiss that everything was going to be okay. As long as she had Ron playing with her.

A/n-Well, this was just in my head, so there you go! I hope you enjoy:) R&R!
