Prologue

The full moon hung low over Fiore. Its light filtered through the slits in the wood of the hut, but it wasn't strong enough to see clearly by. The beast inside took its claw back, drawing it out of the moonlight. It hissed at the cowering humans and a flicking tongue tasted their terror. Quietly, it crept toward them, scales rubbing together in the darkness. The humans didn't dare to make a sound.

With a shriek, the monster slashed out with a steel claw. Blood splattered across the walls, a few drops even landing on the creature's scales. And then there was one.

The lone female, pregnant with a baby boy, shrunk into herself. She looked frantically from side to side, not noticing the blood on her clothes. Unconsciously, she wrapped her hands around her stomach, though her child was not yet visible.

However, the creature had seen the motion, and the wrath he had had had seemed to fade away in that moment. It stuck its head closer to the woman, and she saw its eyes. They were gentle, you could say loving even. Human. The fear left her momentarily, until the creature backed up and she saw its body again.

It wasn't a dragon. It had no wings, for one, and its body looked more like a four legged crab with a long winding tail. Little spots of light were reflected by maroon scales. The fear returned.

It took in a deep breath and the woman curled into herself, wondering what it was going to do next. "My baby," she whispered, her voice hoarse with fear, "please don't hurt my baby." Tears started trailing down her face, but she paid them no heed, seeming to not notice them.

The wrath had not returned to the creature, but its eyes were now hooded. The woman could not see what was in them anymore. It let out its breath, long tendrils of mist the color of the creature's scales filling the room. Through the mist, which she unsuccessfully tried to not breathe in, she saw the creature shrink into the form of a human.

Just a boy, it was just a young man, she thought in surprise. The mist completely cleared. To her surprise, it did nothing, but change the beast into a man. It was a just a child that had done this.

"I'm sorry," he mumbled, dropping to his knees, and then his whole body was on the floor. His breathing evened and the woman sat against the wall, trembling, until the sun rose to warm her body.

A/N: Yes, I know, this is very short ;; It's just an idea that has been rolling around in my head, so I wrote it out. I don't know if I should continue this or what, so tell me what you think, yeah? It'll get to Fairy Tail in the next chapter, this is just the prologue.
