Crystal tears. That was the only thing that he could think about. Her tears, her heartbroken face, her heartbreak. How could he do this to her? Well he had. He'd kissed the other girl, and left his lover sobbing alone in her cold rooms. Sometimes he wondered if he should've told her that she was breaking him. Her work obsession, her need to be active, her never ceasing sense of duty. Even when they were together her eyes betrayed her, showing him she needed to be someplace far far away. Someplace were they needed her. So she'd taken work off one time, and that one time had caught him. He remembered because his arms had been linked around a very beautiful girl and the door had swung open and her happy face had fallen right off.
It wasn't that she wasn't pretty, or fun, or intelligent. She was pretty in her own way, with a sparkle of life and happiness around her. She was delicate outside of her work, but when you got her started she didn't finish until she was sure it was over. That was some of the things he liked, no loved about her but she was too busy for him. She always had been. She'd been far above his reach anyway, but he'd caught her and she'd been willing. She was still willing; he knew that if he was to go back, to apologize she'd take him back. This was another reason she was too good for him. He was selfish but then sometimes she was too, but rarely. Relationships were giving and taking, but she had given and taken more then he had. Well given more, but he'd taken her for granted, and had always figured that when she wasn't off working she would be with him. He was mistaken; she had friends and a life outside of work. Little did he know he'd soon be jealous of whatever animals were following her then.
So they had made mistakes. They had fallen apart, and yet still in his heart he knew that he would probably always love her. How could he not. Even when he saw her everyday, even when she was always there laughing but her eye revealing the pain was still inside of her. She probably wanted to give up and let herself go but she wouldn't allow it. Half of her was the girl who wanted to give up, to let go, and run away but the other half was the stronger half, the stubborn half making her cling to it and making her make herself the same girl she was even if inside she wasn't.
It was why he loved her and why he wanted to go back. But he couldn't. He refused himself to fall to that weakness.
A/N I don't really know what pairing it is. It could be Kel/Dom, Beka/Rosto, or Alanna/George. Seeing as all three of those female heroes are work obsessed. Well not so much obsessed as Beka is determined to be the best Provost Guard she can be, Kel the best Knight, and Alanna has always been off adventuring somewhere in all the books. So if you think it matches one of those then please let me know I just wasn't sureā¦
