Deep sea gray eyes are her best feature, best among many outstanding, along with her voice.
She's always shined, brilliant, stunning, had her husband's eyes long before he was her husband, long before he even knew her name.
A young Kaien watches her pass by with Ukitake-taicho's paperwork every afternoon to be taken to and from processing. It's become a bit of a ritual, and he spends virtually every day that he sees soft ink black hair and gray eyes trying to get the pretty girl's attention.
And of course, she doesn't bite.
There's a look of grave sweetness on her face, always, but she doesn't laugh, has only the slightest hint of a smile on her face and her eyes are focused straight ahead.
The girl's got tunnel vision, and she barely notices Kaien, even if she's just about all Kaien himself notices.
It would be easier if he could put her out of mind, but obviously, Kaien can not, and something will have to be done.
His plan is simple, goes somewhat awry, but still works.
Kaien ends down on his feet in front of her, spread-eagle and awkward. He'll find himself in this position again when they're married, though usually it's to over-dramatically beg her forgiveness for some faux pas.
Her soft laugh is better than any music Kaien's ever heard out of fine instruments as her sea gray eyes, her best feature, always, crinkle up and sparkle as Kaien finally learns her name.
'Miyako.'
Nice name.
He can still see the gray of her eyes as she walks away.
He'll be here tomorrow, but now that Kaien's got her name, he'll at least be able to talk to her.
Kaien can't wait to make Miyako laugh again.
