This is a Hunger Games fanfic I wrote… it's the first one I've ever written, so go easy on me ;) it's in Finnick's pov in catching Fire, when President Snow announces the Quarter Quell. I really loved Finnick and wanted to hear more about him and Annie, and since there weren't all that many fanfics about him, I decided to write one myself ;) Hope you like it ;)
Disclaimer: All characters and storyline belong to Hunger Games author, Suzanne Collins…
We all gather at the square for tonight's mandatory viewing. I supposed it's just another more news on the 'happy couple' from District 12. It always is. As much as I admire Katniss for what she has started, whether intentional or not, I find the constant star-crossed lovers updates unnerving. I wonder if this how everyone felt every time my face showed up on those screens. It wouldn't surprise me, with the way I've acted onscreen, I wouldn't like myself either.
Sure enough, Caesar's face appears, and Katniss' stylist is interviewed. It ends, and the square begins to clear, but then President Snow's loathsome face flashes into our view. What would he say? He begins with the Dark Days, leading to the Hunger Games. It's the 75th year, the Quarter Quell. He looks directly into the camera, his snakelike eyes cold, and says, "On the seventy-fifth anniversary, as a reminder to the rebels that even the strongest among them cannot overcome the power of the Capitol, the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors." Immense anger and pain surges through me in an instant. That's all I feel. The selection of victors here is a decent size, but they are all people I've come to know and like. People I care about. What if..? I freeze, and my head snaps up to see Annie, trembling violently. In an instant, I wrap my arms around her protectively. No. They can't have her. It's selfish, but I would trade anything to keep her safe. We hold onto each other indefinitely. I need her just as much as she needs me.
Eventually, I look up as hear murmuring throughout the crowd. The anger is plain on their faces. If the Capitol somehow believed this Quarter Quell would somehow quench the current uprisings, they were wrong. Looking around at the faces that make up District 4, I can tell it's just the beginning.
