Birds fluttered above the trees and the long road that stretched from one end of the kingdom to the other end, which was had forests full dark monsters and mountains filled with tunnels and ancient dungeons, all filled with ancient mysteries and magic. On the road, three strangers joined each other, glancing over their shoulders into the trees. The large Orc-human, a disgraced crossbred who had fire in his eyes, large fingers rubbed the tough wooden spear he used as walking staff, the metal tip gleaming in the sunlight that filtered through the trees.
"Tell me, orc…" The human asked, his blue eyes casting a glance at the orc's scars that riddled his back. "How many battles have you been? Clearly you've been in a few."
The orc glanced at the human, huffing. "I don't seek battle, I only seek the evil and evil destroys itself."
"Deep." The large woman nodded as she fixed her filthy hair into a pony-tail. "I didn't think orc's could be so deep. Must be the human side of you."
"It's Carbos." The Orc growled, glaring behind him at the two humans, both laughing nervously.
"Carbos, the giant who speak few words." The man said as he bowed slightly, his quiver and short bow on his back rattling. "I'm Ave."
The woman laughed. "Normed the Barbarian."
Ave eyebrow rose. "Now, what's a barbarian doing out in the forest?" Normed grinned, lifting her hand axe from her side and spun it on her finger.
"Living as a barbarian is no fun when there are no more fights to be had. I cleaned the last forest out of giant spiders you see, and there's aren't' any fights left." She sighed, throwing her axe into the air and let it fall back into its holder on her waist. "What about you- is that coffee?" She said quickly to Carbos who had pulled a leather bladder from his satchel and heat rose out of the lid. Carbos eyebrow rose.
"Its broth, I save the ale for the taverns."
"Huh, we should go drink at the tavern together next town we get to." Ave suggested, seeing a glint of delight in the orc's eyes. Normed pouted.
"If its not coffee, its not worth it."
"Heroes! Wait!"
The three turned to an old famer on a dirt road turning off the road they were on, and the three of them glanced down the road they came from.
"Heroes?"
"Tell me, how does one know if one a hero?"
"I can't see any. You?"
The farmer reached them, huffing. "Please, I beg of you, help me." Three paused, blinking.
"Us?" Ave asked, his eyes narrowing at the man. The dirty farmer turned to him, clasping his frail but tough hands.
"Please, its my son. Something is wrong."
Ave crossed his arms over his dark, leathery clothes as Carbos stepped forward, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Lead the way."
"Oh thank you. Please fallow me."
"Seriously? What about our ale we were going to have?" Ave asked as Carbos asked, Normed shrugged and fallowed them. Sighing, Ave fallowed.
"My son returned the other day, white as the whitest of my sheep, terrified. When my wife and I got him to our home he collapsed. We didn't know what to do. My wife and daughter is keeping an eye on him as I kept an eye on the road for any heroes."
"There you go again on heroes. Still don't see... wait? Us?" Ave turned to him surprised. Normed and Carbos turned to him and sighed. "Duh..." He said quietly as they reached the farm.
The farm sat quietly in a large field, several barns stood on the far side of the field, and they could see the sheep munching on the grass. The house was old, and the door creaked as the farmer pushed it open and invited them inside. The doorframe creaked slightly as Carbos large form squeezed through the small door and they saw the mother glance up at them, the boy lying on the main bed. Carbos's muscles visibly relaxed when he saw the child and cracked his neck before he silently moved onto the other side of the bed. He glanced up at the mother, who moved back away to give him room.
"Hun, I found these heroes on the road, they know what to do." The farmer comforted her, Normed and Ave sharing a glance.
"Wow, expectations much?" Normed said quietly to Ave, who nodded, giving the house another glance. There were herbs scattered across the table, the mother clearly attempting to cure her son of… something. Glancing back at the orc, who had his pale green ear up to the boy's mouth.
"I haven't seen an orc act like this before. He seems to know what he's doing."
Normed pulled a small wooden box from her bag, glancing at Ave. "I have this medic kit, do you think he wants it?" She asked, Ave shrugging.
Stepping forward Normed lifted the Medic Kit up to him, Carbos quickly sending her a glare before she could speak.
"Ok, maybe not." She packed it back into her bag as Carbos turned back to the boy.
"I can not find the reason he's-"
"Devik." The mother offered as her daughter entered the house. They glanced at her, and she bowed her head shyly and Carbos turned back to Devik.
"I can't find the reason Devik is weak. He appears just to be asleep."
"Ok then, lets go." Ave quickly said, clapping his hands together.
"You can't go! You have to help him." The daughter cried, Ave and Normed turning to her.
"Hey if there's nothing we can do, there's nothing we can do. Plus Carbos says he's just asleep."
"But its… its all my fault." The girl cried, holding her face into her face.
Normed and Ave glanced at each other, before glancing at Carbos. Carbos glanced briefly at them, and nodded towards the girl.
"You talk to her. Leave me to work." He turned back to Devik as Normed pushed Ave back and stepped towards the girl.
"I'll do it, I'm not enjoying the vibe he's giving me."
"Sure, I'll leave the kid for you." Ave happly stepped back as Normed kneeled in font of the girl. The daughter glanced up at her through her fingers, sniffling.
"Why is it your fault, hun?" She asked softly, the girl lowered her hands and held them in front of her.
"He kept going into the woods, and he told me a few days ago he found a old ruin out there. He told me he was going back there and not to tell papa or mama… I should've stopped him but he was already in the forest… and I was too scared to fallow."
"This ruin… did he say anything else about it?" Carbos asked, standing. The girl frightenly glanced towards him.
"He… he said that it could've been a temple… he didn't know."
Carbos hummed deeply, frowning. "I believe there is something dark about this. I say we cast it out." He grabbed his spear on his back and stomped the ground. The mother shrieked, casting a worried glance at her son and the giant over him. Carbos smiled, sheathing the weapon.
"Worry not, this blade has only touched the blood of the wicked, your son is not one of them."
"First you wanted to see a boy, now you wanted to search for temple in a giant forest. I should've found anther party to join." Ave sighed.
"He said the ruins was east of here…" The girl offered timidly and Normed smiled, ruffling her hair.
"Thank you, hun. That'll do." She stood and nodded at Carbos. "I'm with you." The two glanced at Ave, who suddenly felt very small compare to these two muscular beings.
He sighed. "Fine. But if this doesn't end well, you two are both buying a jar of ale at the next town we get to."
"Deal." Normed nodded and exited the poor house. "I'll led then." Carbos squeezed through the door next, casting a glare at her.
"Why you?"
"Yeah, why you?" Ave asked as he fallowed them. "I'm clearly the one with-"
"You're certainly aren't leading. Plus, I was the one who rose the challenge to talk to the girl… Chickens." Normed said smirking. Carbos rolled his shoulders and nodded.
"Very well, head on."
"Oh come on, what's the point of traveling through the forests if we don't see any sights." Normed complained, Carbos and Ave ahead of her.
"Climbing a cliff side only to see the view and then jump off it again isn't the best travel plans." Ave said over his shoulder.
"But the view!"
"We're here." Carbos said, crouching. The two glanced over his shoulders and found themselves staring at three-story temple with a dome at the top. The front door was crafted out of hard wood and between them and the door laid a pool.
Ave whistled. "What's a temple doing all the way out here?" The three stepped out of the bushes and stepped out on smooth pebbles.
"No idea." Carbos said, his eyes narrowing at the pool and then at the temple suspiciously. "How about you go ahead, barbarian." The two men pushed the woman ahead, Normed snorting and rolled her eyes when they pulled back slightly.
"Sure thing, chickens." She walked ahead of them, whistling.
The pool erupted as a snake reared back, hissing at Normed. Normed stumbled back before sliding a javelin out of it's holder and growled back. The two men stayed back for a second, fist bumping.
"Called it."
