Author's Note: This is my first story so it isn't great.
As Kate stood in front of everyone talking about Captain Montgomery she looked over at his family and saw one of his daughters sitting there crying. This caused her to remember painful memories of sitting at her mother's funeral and as those thoughts crossed her mind there was a slight tremble in her voice. Then she glanced over to her right and quickly regained her strength and kept talking.
Standing there was Castle as he always did and always would.
As he stood there he was scanning the crowd and looking across the cemetery contemplating everything that had happened. Then he saw the sunlight glint off of something next to a tombstone.
He jumped to tackle Beckett as he realized what it was and as he did one single shot rang out across the cemetery…
That single bullet flew through the air faster than the blink of an eye hitting its target, Kate Beckett.
Beckett found herself laying on the ground trying to catch her breath, not realizing what had just happened. As she laid there she looked up to see Castle kneeling over her. He held her head in his arms and she could see the pain in his face and the tears rolling down his cheeks.
She tried so hard to speak but the impact of the bullet on her Kevlar vest had knocked the wind out of her. She wanted nothing more than to comfort him, to tell him she was ok, because he had not known she was wearing the vest.
While she was laying there trying to speak, Castle spoke in such a quiet voice that Kate was barely able to hear him. There was so much sweetness and anguish in his voice as he said, "I love you. I love you, Kate. I love…"
But his words trailed off as another shot rang out from behind him. The bullet sliced through the air with ease and penetrated the back of the target's neck cutting through the C4 and C5 vertebrae severing the spinal cord and leaving a smooth circular hole.
Richard Castle's lifeless body fell across Beckett pinning her to the ground.
She began screaming hysterically, "NOOO! RICK! RICK! RICK…"
