A/N: Set in the world of Fast Forward ( Which is set after the 2003 cartoon). If you have not seen it: The turtles and Master Splinter are, basically, transported into a future world. This series will cover some of the darker implications of that transportation. Thank you for reading!

Missing

Leonardo

It was the future. It was shiny and bright and full of the kind of peace that they had only every dreamt of. The vicious fights between him and Karai were a thing of the past. The long, distant past that was viewed in museums and on old videos viewed on high screen televisions. They were free, free to walk in the streets without fear, without judgement. It was a freedom they had only ever dreamed about. It was a freedom that seemed too good to be true.

It came at a great cost. New enemies, confusion, the loss of friends. Casey, April. Gone. Long dead and leaving a boy in their place. A friend, and ally, a boy who they would all protect with their lives. Missing. Parts of their lives were missing.

The air was crisp on his plastron as he sought respite from the busyness, the light and constant energy that surged through this new world. It wasn't like the old New York. It was not like the old New York, the city that never slept. There were pockets of darkness, or peace, places to hide from the lights and the noise, places to find peace, the peace of the rooftops, the silence. He sipped his drink. The Sake no longer tasted the same. It tasted wrong.

The peace was gone, leaving behind the brutality of constant light, that gave no respite and tore his soul into pieces. Their friends were dead. The harsh reality bored into his soul day after day, while his brothers seemed to think of this as some alternate reality. All they knew was gone. She was gone.

Karai was gone. Missing from this world. A woman who sent his life in turmoil that he had not believed possible. An enemy, a betrayer. No need to mourn the loss of the enemy. No need. Then why did he feel a burning ache in his chest that refused to go away? Why did the ache continue to grow and grow until it consumed him in flashes of pain. Her death did not pain him. It couldn't. Who did that make him? A warrior, a leader, pained by the death of his betrayer.

She had been loyal. He just wished it had not been to the Shredder. Leonardo stared into the Sake that no longer tasted the same.

And in the noise of the city, he did something he had never thought possible. He bowed his head for the life of an enemy, a betrayer, a warrior.
