Prologue
Layla Heartfilia the most beautiful and kind woman who is watching over her little daughter playing outside with a kite. Layla entwined her fingers on her lap politely as she smiles lovely while her warm brown eyes are on the little girl who is laughing so joyfully. A breeze went through her long blonde hair that Layla pushed some strands of her hair back behind her ear. Suddenly, her throat dry that she wheezed while placed her hand on her chest as her other hand grabbed her vintage silver key with golden thin chain hugged around its body.
Layla let out a few harsh coughed. She glanced down, grabbed an indestructible yellow crystal of padlock shape of a peacock with a keyhole in the middle. Layla immediately unlock the padlock with her key, "Unlock thee door upon Mafioso Phantom! Lust Lussuria di Varia!" Layla rasped.
In the golden flame appeared of a young man who has brown hair with a side part of a green hair. He has a tall and muscular build body, tan skin, and he wears a white dress shirt with black tie, black jeans tucked into black combat boots, an open trench coat that reached to his knees, and red-rimmed sunglasses.
"L-lussuria…" Layla croaked as she placed her hand on her bare throat while her face pales.
Lussuria blinked and gasped. He ran to his mistress' side and rubbed her back, "Oh sweetie, hold on!" he lifted his hand and mumbled in his own language. A magnificent peacock appeared in golden lights and the feathers shine in front of weakened Layla.
In a few minutes later, the colors brought back to Layla as she lowered her shoulders in relief. She glanced up at Lussuria with a grateful smile, "Thank you, Lussuria." She clasped his hands.
Lussuria smiles back at her, "Anything for you, sweetie." He gently pats Layla's knee maternally.
"Mama!" Layla tilted her head at her daughter who ran toward her with a curious smile. Lussuria blinked and glanced between the mother and daughter. When the daughter arrived in front of her mother, she looked up at Lussuria with confusing eyes. "Hello!" she beamed happily.
Lussuria smiles friendly at her, "Hello dear!"
Layla released one of her hands and placed on her little daughter's head, "Lucy, meet one of my dear friends, Lussuria." She introduced her daughter and Lussuria to each other.
The man gasped, "Oh my! This little cutie is Lucy?!" he smiles widely when Layla nodded her head, "I haven't seen you a long time, little Lucy, I was there when your mother gave birth." Lussuria explained.
Lucy made an 'o' shape mouth with curious and awed, "You saw me born?!" she asked with amazed. The mother and her phantom chuckled at Lucy's reaction. Then Lucy saw a beautiful peacock, "Wow!" she went to the creature with curious, she reached for it and start petting, "So pretty!" she squealed with excitement.
Layla giggled happily while Lussuria smiles softly at the scene where his peacock freely allows Lucy to touch him. The phantom glanced back at his mistress, "Layla, sweetie… as much as my Sun flame can almost heal anything, I'm afraid that I can't heal your illness. It's only slow down the virus, you know." Lussuria whispered softly, he doesn't want a little sweetheart child to overhear their conversation.
The mother closed her eyes, "I know, Lussuria. But I need this, just a little more time with my family." She whispered back sadly. They both sat quietly in the sad atmosphere until Layla opens her eyes half-way, "Can you do me a favor?"
"Of course, anything for you, sweetheart." Lussuria squeezes Layla's hand gently.
Layla's warm brown eyes stared at Lucy who is cooing at the peacock, "Please… take care of my daughter. Stay by her side, be her friend, please." She pleaded her spirit.
The man frowned deeply, "Of course, I'll stay by little Lucy's side." He assured his mistress then furrowed his eyebrows, "However, I can't say about others. They still loathed mortals, you know. They only cared about you." He reminded Layla.
"…you all know that I don't have long to live." Layla smiles sadly with resigns eyes, "Soon, I'll be gone, and I'll have to leave my padlocks and key to Lucy." She said.
Lussuria grimaced, "I do not mind helping little Lucy, but I doubt that others would want to have her as their Mistress. They have the right to refuse unless she proves to them of her strength, plus… you know, we as Varia, only stay loyal to our Queen and nothing, no one will break our bond and loyalty to you, Layla. Even after your death. You know that."
The mother sighed, "I know, Lussuria. But, at least, you and hopefully them, will help her?" her brown eyes begged at her spirit.
"As I said, I will try help Lucy any way I could. Even if the others won't help, I'll help her, and stay be her side. Plus, little Lucy is practically our Princess." Lussuria said.
Layla smiles lovely at him, "Thank you."
"I hope you don't mind me asking, sweetheart… but, are you sure you want your daughter to follow your path? She can always use the Celestial Spirit magic instead." He whispered with concerned as he overlooks at a little girl and his peacock.
Layla bit her lip, contemplative, "I want Lucy to pick her own path, I want her to be happy. But… Jude… he doesn't want her to be a mage." She said softly as she knew her phantoms disliked her husband but respect her decision to marry him because she loved him. Lussuria lined his lip emotionless, he does not like Jude one bit. None. "I can understand why he doesn't like mages. They did destroy his family a long time ago. But I can't stop, I love my magic and I love you guys so much, you are all previous to me." Layla added with passionate with determined and warm eyes.
The Sun phantom smiles warmly at his mistress, "And you are our precious Queen." Then he noticed Layla's brown eyes determined, "I recognized that look, a new mission?"
The mother nodded her head, "Yes, I decided to do this one last mission." She took out a folded brown flyer from her pocket and unfolded, "I saw this and knew I have to success this mission, look at the bonus prize." She handed it to her spirit.
Lussuria read the flyer carefully, "…I see... not only this is the last mission, but also the bonus prize is the Phantom Padlock." He tilted his head, "You do know that we, the Varia don't like to share our Queen, right?"
Layla giggled at her spirit's possessive tone, "I know, but it's not for me, silly. It's for Lucy." She glanced at her daughter, "I think it would be wonderful once she has her own Phantom Padlock. Plus, I would love to do this one last mission with my precious Varia phantoms." She added.
"It would be an honor to fight alongside with you one again, sweetheart. Although… don't think I didn't notice when you change your subject when I suggest about Lucy's choice of magic." Lussuria raised his eyebrows at his mistress' slyness.
Layla smiles playfully, "You caught me, alright… I did explain to Lucy about the magic. When she asked about my magic, I only explained to her basic of Mafioso Phantom magic and… she wants to be Mafioso Phantom mage." Lussuria stared at her, "I know, I know… I did tell her about other magic, Celestial Spirit magic, I've told her a few times, but she wasn't interested. She truly wants to be the mage like me, Lussuria. She wants to grow up like me. And I couldn't break her hopes…" Layla bit her lip nervously.
"Oh, sweetie…" Lussuria sighed dramatically, "Little Lucy has no idea the burden that she will carry if she becomes the Mafioso Phantom mage?" Layla shook her head, "…alright, how about this, we will go this mission, success and get the padlock for Lucy, and then, you will have to explain to her about the true meaning to become a dangerous mage. With details. No sugarcoat words. Got it?" Lussuria suggested/demanded.
Layla sighed but nodded her head, "Of course. It would be best for Lucy to understand. And who knows, she might change her mind." Her Sun phantom was satisfied that his mistress' daughter won't be kept in the dark about the dangerous mage.
After a few weeks later once, the mission was finally succeeded. Layla returns back to her home; however, she has collapsed that send doctor to arrive at the Heartfilia mansion. The news breaks out that Layla has only a week left to live and spend her borrow times on the bed. Her husband and Lucy stood by her side, spend time with her, and make the memories every last moment. Until Layla passed away in her bed with her phantoms and family surrounded her.
Ever since Layla's death, Jude the sorrowful and anguished widow took the padlocks and key to locked up in an anti-magic vault. Left Lucy all alone with servants for years until one day, on her sixteen birthday, she received a gift from one of the maids that belonged to her mother, Layla's key and a padlock.
Not even a week yet and Lucy ran away from home for freedom and dreams.
"I'm going to be a Mafioso Phantom mage, like my mother!" Lucy promised herself with a fire of determined eyes.

…
Kingdom of Fiore
Location: Cedar
Blonde hair that grown to her mid-back length, curious yet excitement brown eyes, fair skin, and she wears blue tank-top, blue skirt, brown boots, and brown hat. Her name is Lucy Heartfilia as she stepped out of the train with a luggage. Her eyes scanned her surrounding in awed by the buildings in the Cedar. The young sixteen years old girl walked through the gate to explore the amazing tall foreign buildings and lively people in the street.
Lucy couldn't believe it, she actually ran away from that place and experiences her first taste of freedom. A wide smile appeared on her face while she walked down the street. Her eyes landed on the sign of the Inn that she immediately went inside the building.
Luckily, she brought enough Jewels to stay in the Inn room for only a few nights. When Lucy arrived in the room that she'll be staying in, it was decent room for a traveler. Lucy was excited that she dropped her luggage next to the bed and flop onto the mattress. It's completely different from her old bed but it was new, fresh, and excitement for her.
Her brown eyes stare at the ceiling in silent. Lucy wants to join the Guild and get missions to earn Jewels and help people. However, she doesn't know a thing about being a mage because of her father who forbids her to use a magic. However, thanks for the wonderful, thoughtful gifts that her mother left one of the maids to give her on her sixteenth birthday.
Lucy sat up, went to her luggage, unzipped it and grabbed a padlock. She observed her padlock once again; the padlock is the size of her palm and the design was interesting. It was made with indestructible purple crystal shape of an angry octopus and a keyhole in the middle. She gently rubs the padlock and took out her mother's key from her pocket. Lucy stares at the key, it was a vintage old-fashioned key that her mother always polished and cherished close to her heart. And now, it's Lucy's turn to take care and cherish this beautiful key.
She bit her lip as she sends her magic into the key that glows slightly, she carefully put her key into the keyhole to release her magic energy into the padlock. Her eyes close, "I, Lucy Heartfilia, unlock thee door upon Mafioso Phantom!"
The padlock shines brightly and shot the purple flame out of the keyhole and landed it in front of Lucy. The sixteen years old blinked as the purple flame faded away to reveal a young late teenage of a pretty boy. He was crouched on the ground when he opened his eyes and stood up on his feet. He is tall and has a lean body. He has dark purple ruffled soft spiky hair, onyx eyes, and he wears eyeliner and has a teardrop-shaped tattoo under his left eye. He also wears lipstick and matched white bandage stickers on his cheeks. He wears a black tank top, purple leather jacket, black leather pants tucked into biker boots, and leather gloves with spikes on his knuckles.
He blinked a few times and tilted his head when he saw Lucy, "Lucy Heartfilia?" Lucy who has been gapped at him for a few minutes. She snapped out of it and nodded her head in silence. "My name is the Great Immortal Skull and Possessor of Cloud Flame." He grinned as he introduced himself.
"A-ah! I'm Lucy Heartfilia and…well, now I guess I am a Mafioso Phantom mage." Lucy said with a shy smile.
Skull hummed, "You guess?" he narrowed his eyes at her, "What do you mean by you guess?"
"You are the first one I have summoned," Lucy answered sheepishly as she pressed her index fingers.
The Cloud phantom blinked at her then frowned, "Is that so? Then… well, at least you do know how to use Phantom Padlock. Does that mean you also have a plan for the Familiga?" he asked with curiosity.
The blonde-hair girl just stared at him blankly.
Skull sweatdropped, "What about Flames?"
Nothing from Lucy's reaction.
"Alright, then do you at least know about the rules?"
Still nothing.
"…let me rephrase this, do you know anything about being Mafioso Phantom mage?" Skull asked with a deadpanned face.
Lucy blinked and tilted her head, "Well… my mother used to be Mafioso Phantom mage about six years ago. I remembered she told me that her phantoms are precious friends to her and that they have strong bonds." A small smile appeared on her face, "I remembered seeing her eyes light up and she always loved to talk about her spirits with such fond and love. I want to be like her, to have my own friends to fight alongside with, and strong unbreakable bonds." She explained softly.
The Cloud phantom stares at the blonde-hair girl then sighed, "Your mother didn't explain to you what it means to be the Mafioso Phantom mage, did she?" Lucy shook her head, "No wonder you have no idea. I thought it was strange someone like you would actually use your magic for the Phantom Padlock. You seem to be the type of person who would use Celestial Spirits magic instead."
"Oh! I actually quite a lot about that." Then Lucy just realized it, "My mom did tell me so much about it that I think, I think she wants me to use that magic instead of…" she frowned as she trailed off with confused, lost, and puzzled.
Skull crossed his arms, "I can understand why your mother would prefer you to use the Celestial Spirits magic, being the Mafioso Phantom mage isn't easy. To be blunt, it's reckless, unpredictably, dangerous, and impossible." His eyes turned cold, "We steal. We kill. We commit crimes. We shed blood. We cause chaos. We are ruthless. And we absolutely despise mortals." Lucy flinched with frightened while she steps backs when Skull explained to her about the dangerous magic.
The blonde-hair girl just shook her head in disbelieve, "B-but… my mother used this magic! My mother was not a cruel mage, she was loving, sweet, and kind! She loved her spirits. She always told me how her phantoms are precious to her! My mom… would never be so… heartless mage." She attempted to understand this, why did her sweet lovely mother would use such an awful and dangerous magic?
"Guess you don't know everything about your mother." Skull dropped his arms, "Look, if you don't want to use Mafioso Phantom magic, then I suggest you not to use the Phantom Padlock. Instead, go search and find yourself a Celestial Spirit Key. I'm sure you would prefer that." Lucy just stared at the ground and Skull sighed. "It was nice to be out on the Earthland after many decades. But it's time for me to return. Good-bye, Lucy Heartfilia." Skull closed his eyes and disappeared in a purple flame and flew back into the padlock.
Lucy dragged her feet to the bed and plop with stunned, 'Mom… why did you become a Mafioso Phantom mage? Why are they so precious to you when they are meant to be such dangerous criminals?'

Next Day
Magic Shop
Lucy searched the magic items through the shelves as she kept her eyes out for any Spirit Key. She has been searching for the key a while and this has been her third stop of a different magic shop. Lucy hopes this shop will be the one that she can possess a key. When she spots a glass cabinet with a lock, she found a silver key with a clock on the head. Lucy immediately ran toward it and leaned to it as she examined the key. 'This must be the spirit key…' she mused.
The blonde-hair girl turned around to speak with the owner of the magic shop about the silver key she wants to buy. When she arrived at the front counter, she halted when she saw a red-eyes woman who stared at the owner in despair. "What do you mean you don't have any strong magic weapon?!" she shrieked in disbelieve.
The owner frowned deeply at the woman, "I'm sorry ma'am. None of those are legal in my shop."
The woman shook her head as she lifted her shaking hands toward the owner, "No! I don't believe it! You must have one! I've been searching for the weapon for days and nights! I need it! I must have it! Please!" she squealed with desperate while she grabbed the owner's shirt and pulled him toward her with pleading eyes.
"Ma'am! Calm down or else I'll call the Knight!" the owner snapped at her as he grabbed the woman's wrists and shove it away from him. However, the woman didn't stop so the owner had no choice but to kicked her out before he seriously calls the Knight.
Lucy watched the entire scene in front of her in silence. The owner sighed and asked his customer if she needed any help. Lucy told him that she wants to buy the silver key and ended up purchased it.
The blonde-hair girl left the shop with a silver key hanging from the hoop against her hip. She hummed softly to herself as she walked down the road in the busy warm day. Her steps paused when she saw the same woman from the magic shop sobbed her eyes out as she was sitting on the bench.
Lucy bit her lip in concerned for the woman. She walked to the woman, "Excuse me?" she asked softly to the crying woman.
The woman lifted her hands and stared at Lucy's eyes, "Y-yes?" she sniffed as she attempted to stop her tears.
"I'm sorry to bother you, but I saw you in the magic shop earlier and… I couldn't help but ask, what's wrong? Why do you need a magic weapon?" Lucy asked with curious and wondering.
The woman laughed humorlessly, "Oh that… I am so mortified and humiliated to act like that, but I was desperate. I need the magic weapons… it's the only way."
The blonde-hair girl sits next to the woman, "Why?"
"My daughter was kidnapped by a creature." Lucy gasped in horror, "A week ago, I was with my daughter at the wood, we were having a picnic together. My daughter, Bertha was chasing a butterfly, hoping to catch it. When she went too far from my sights. I called her back, but she never did. My Bertha is always an obedient child, she never causes any trouble. She's a good girl. I searched for her and I saw her got taken away by a creature! It was so fast, and it grabbed my daughter!" the mother wailed.
Lucy rubbed the mother's back with sympathy, "That's awful! Did you tell the Knight?"
The woman nodded her head, "Of course I did! But they didn't find her, so I decided to request a mission for the mage to save my daughter but… none of them has accepted my mission and it's been a week already! My dear, sweet Bertha must be so scared! I need to find her! I can't just stay still and wait for help; my daughter needs me!" the mother said with determined yet sorrowful in her eyes.
The blonde-hair girl stared at the mother then lined her lips, "I'll look for your daughter." She volunteers, and the mother snapped her eyes at Lucy in shocked, puzzled, confused, and hope.
"I'm sorry, who are you?" the woman sniffed.
Lucy smiles, "My name is Lucy and I'm a mage." She simply explained, she doesn't want to add that fact that she's barely a mage since she only has one key that is probably not helpful.
"Are you really?" the mother's eyes light up when Lucy nodded her head, "Oh thank you, thank you, thank you!" the mother sobbed in relief as she grabbed the blonde-hair girl in her arms.
The mage rubbed the woman's back, "Please, there's no need to thank me. I only want to help." She said, she understands what it's like to have loved one gone.
"Oh dear…" the mother breaks the hug as she attempted to control her tears, "You have no idea how hopeful I heard when you said that you're a mage. Oh! Goodness, excuse me… my name is Margaret. And here…" Margaret grabbed a photo from her pocket, "This is my Bertha."
Lucy examined the photo of a cute little girl who is about eight years old. She has dark brown hair that grown to her waist, tied up pig-tails, wide innocent green eyes, freckles across her nose, pale skin, and she wore a green sundress and white flip-flops. Bertha looked almost exactly like her mother. "Where did you last saw your daughter?" Lucy asked the mother.
Margaret explained to Lucy about the woods that few miles away from the buildings that have a trail that leads the spring lake. So, Lucy decided to check it out after she changed her clothes. Margaret gave her the paper filled-out information of her place and numbers.
When Lucy arrived at the Inn, in the room that she paid for the short stay, she quickly went to her luggage to grab a white blouse to covered black sports bra, black skirt, black boots, and a hoop ring to hold her key against her hip. She also grabbed her whip and tied on the other hip. "Alright!" Just as Lucy was about to leave, she paused when her eyes landed on the padlock on the dresser. She stared at it in a second then grabbed it, placed it in the ring hoop, and left the room. 'Just in case.' Was her last thought.
