(Authors note: Hey everyone! It's my birthday! And to celebrate I wrote this birthday themed oneshot for Sam and Rachel. I'm still working on the last chapter for While You Were Sleeping, but I had to get this out Enjoy.)
Sam was getting a bit restless in this room. He had already gone through a long book and did a lap around the bunker, but still he was bored. It was becoming too long of a gap between cases Sam was itching to get out and do something, anything. He strongly considered heading out and visiting Rachel. He had been seeing her a lot lately, finding different excuses for staying a day or two. This would be a good one but he had the feeling deep down that once he left, Dean would find a case and he'd have to turn back. Still though, he was fidgety and a good call to Rachel would pass the time.
It took her a bit longer to pick up then usual. Sam started to worry that something happened after he left. To his relief she did finally answer. "Hi Sam!" she shouted over her noisy environment. "Sorry, hold on, let me head someplace quieter." He listened to the rustling of her moving around before she spoke up again. "Is this better?"
"Yeah. That's perfect."
"Sorry I almost missed you. Forgot to switch it back to vibrate."
"It's alright."
"So what's up?"
"Nothing, really. I'm a little bored."
"Not working?"
"No, haven't found a good case yet. Sound like you're having fun."
"Oh, yeah. Just at the bar having a girl's night out celebrating."
"What are you celebrating?"
"My birthday."
Sam jumped to his feet. "It's your birthday?!"
"Well, no, it's actually tomorrow. But you know, Sundays are pretty busy for me so we're doing something today."
"Why didn't you say something?"
"We've both been busy and we've only been dating a few weeks. Don't worry about it Sam, it's no big deal."
"It's your birthday, of course it's a big deal."
"Sam, birthdays just aren't that important for me. Anymore it's just a day I go see a couple stupid movies and then get dragged around bars by my sister. Really, if I wanted something from you, I would have mentioned it. It's fine."
"I suppose. I still feel bad. I should've done something for you."
"Well tell ya what, next time you get free come over and we can do something special."
"Alright, just let me know what you want to do when I get there."
"Okay, sounds good," she chuckled. "I better get back. Lisa is has two drinks and is making faces at me."
"Alright, well, have fun and happy early birthday."
"Thanks Sam, I'll see you soon."
Well, Sam thought after he hung up, now I have something to do.
To Rachel's surprise the next morning before the service she got a text from Sam. "Happy actual birthday! In town, passing through. Will be here all day. Come to room 156 at the Midtowner Inn when you can. Have fun at work."
She able to respond back between the service and class thanking him for the birthday wish and letting him know she'd be there around four. It was just after three when she called him. "So um…. It might be closer to five. I got accidently glitter bombed, so I'm gonna head home and clean up first."
"How do you get 'accidently' glitter bombed?"
"When you have little kids doing crafts and the tube cap gets stuck."
"Ah, I see. Well I hope the rest of your day's gone better."
"Yeah. Got a lot of birthday wishes and a cookie. And the kids made me cards so it's been good. What have you been up to?"
"Doing some research. Nothing special. Have anything in mind of what to do tonight?"
"No. Not yet. I didn't expect to hear from you so soon."
"That's me, always full of surprises."
His tone sounded a little odd there. "Sam Winchester, are you up to something?"
"… No."
After scrubbing out most of the glitter that she could, and getting it out of her shower afterwards, she headed down to the inn. Rachel was very confused when she pulled into the parking lot and didn't see the impala, not even by room 156. I thought he said they were passing through, she thought, it should be here then. Unless of course it was just Sam. She pulled out her phone and checked the message again. Midtowner Inn, that's what it said. She tried peeking through the window to see if the boys were inside but the curtains were closed tight. With out much else to do she knocked on the door.
The door opened slightly and Sam poked his head out. "Close your eyes!"
"What?"
"I said close your eyes."
"I thought you weren't up to something."
"I'm not. Just close your eyes. No peeking."
"Okay, okay." She did as she was told and placed a hand over eyes. Sam took the other one and led her safely inside. "Can I open them now?" she asked when the door shut behind her.
"Not yet." Sam let go of her hand and she heard him take a few steps away. "Okay now."
Rachel opened her eyes to see Sam standing in the middle of a festively decorated room. "Surprise!" he shouted and held out his arms. There were colorful streamers hanging from every wall, balloons tied to everything they could, and a large dollar store birthday banner fastened over the beds.
"What is all this?" she blushed and giggled.
"It's a little birthday party."
She looked around the room in complete awe. No one had ever thrown her a surprise party before. As she moved closer to Sam she noticed on the table behind him was a mini chocolate cake and a six pack.
"Sam, you didn't have to do all this."
"Of course I did." He hugged her. "Happy birthday," he said with a kiss.
"Thank you." She squeezed him back. "Are those presents?" She pointed to the two wrapped objects on one of the beds.
"It's not really a birthday without presents."
"No, no, no, please. This is more then enough."
"Don't worry, if it makes you feel any better they're nothing fancy." He pulled away and handed over the small rectangular one. "This is from Dean. He said you have to open his first." She ripped it open revealing it was a Gene Simmons bobble head.
"Awesome," she chuckled. "I know right where to put this. Tell I say thanks."
Sam smiled and handed over the other one. "And this one is from me." It was a solid cylinder and was a lot heaver then the other. She unwrapped this one much more carefully. "A lavender candle?"
"Yeah, I know you still have a lot on your plate, it's supposed to help you relax. Do you like it?"
"I love it. I love all this." She put the candle down and wrapped him in hug. "And I love you," she said pulling him into a kiss.
"I love you too."
"You better make sure to tell me when your birthday is so I can arrange something."
He smiled and laughed. "I'm looking forward to it already."
