Disclaimer: Mulder, Scully, and her unborn child belong not to me, but to God-Almighty, AKA Chris Carter and 1013. Please don't sue. It would only be a waste of time and a great big hassle, and someone might poke an eye out.

The rain fell steadily outside the closed window. Dana Scully watched the drops splatter on the misted glass, and sighed deeply. Her thoughts were not on the next day's paperwork, but on Fox Mulder's abduction-and her pregnancy.

She sighed, resting a slender hand upon her stomach, and splayed her fingers slightly. Her mind wandered, to the familiar fantasy that would inhabit her mind until her partner returned-that is, if he ever did.

In this image, a small toddler, a girl child, hurried across a freshly mowed lawn. Behind her came Mulder, steps just small enough to let the little girl think she was ahead. Looking back, the youngster laughed, auburn curls shaking as she tossed her head.
In one swift motion, Mulder leaned forward and picked up the toddler, lifting her into the air and listening to her delighted squeal. Dana herself sat on the porch, watching them with smiling eyes.

Returning to the real world with a disappointing shudder, she wrapped her arms around herself for warmth and pulled the blankets up, nestling further into the cushions of the couch. Suddenly feeling a pull towards the closed window, she got up, letting the comforter fall abandoned to the floor.

"Oh, Mulder," Dana whispered, tracing the masking tape 'X' on the windowpane. She ran her index finger along the rough edges, smoothing them down against the glass. Leaning against the wall, she rested her forehead against the chilled partitions. "When will you ever come back to me?" Quietly reflecting on her words, she added silently, 'To us?'

There was no response, save for her ragged breaths, and the occasional sigh. She looked up once more, and saw a shadow that drifted across the sky-probably just a cloud-but she wept anyway. Tears fell for the lack of a sign.

"Damn!" Her strangled yell startled even herself. "This isn't funny anymore. You had me believing he was really gone. Good work! You did it! You fooled Dana Scully. But it's over. Do you hear me? The joke's over!"

And then her pitiful sobs. "Give him back to me. Please, God. Give me back my love."

Please, everyone, if you read, review. It only takes about three seconds and it would ensure that I post the next part of Nighttime Thoughts. Thanks.
